A bit frazzled this afternoon, but taking a quick moment out of my busy schedule to remind myself that every day is a gift.

"That's why they call it the present." 🎁

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

Just a reminder that Wikipedia is the only remaining reliable source of information that right wing billionaires can't control. (Although they'll never stop trying.)

Please donate to them whenever you can. Even a little bit helps.

Dollars to donuts those edgelords have never organized an actual protest consisting of more than like five edgelord friends
dynamicsymmetry.bsky.social
Like I know there are edgelord leftists out there who look down their noses at shit like No Kings but sorry you guys, the more mass protest looks fun and family-friendly, the bigger it gets and the better its chances of being broadly effective

Portland does not own the patent on inflatable animal costume protests, come on people

I have fucking had it with the edgelord leftists who quote post my shit with incitements to violence, like I'm sorry either you're the fucking feds or you're somehow even dumber than they are.

It's very sad. Many seem to misremember that Obama was president during 9/11, Katrina, and caused the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan plus Great Recession.

George W. Bush? Reminds them of their grandpas! A nice elderly man who paints.

And so, of course, many believe that Biden was president in 2020.
nicholasgrossman.bsky.social
“Who was president in 2020?” remains one of the most pertinent questions in American politics—absurd, yes, but here we are—and that extends to “who was president January 1 - 19, 2021?”
joycewhitevance.bsky.social
That’s a nice trick, since Biden wasn’t the president on Jan 6.

Attacks on the federal workforce are also attacks on Black workers, who are overrepresented in the public sector.

Black unemployment is 7.5%. I'm reminded of Coates' observation that Black Americans regularly experience conditions that would be considered a crisis if whites faced them.
Black Unemployment Is Surging Again. This Time Is Different.

To be human is to teach. It’s the most loving and honorable thing we can do for one another.

I see the light in our teacher candidates' eyes when they speak about working with young people.

We are light workers. I don't want that light hidden under a proverbial bushel. I want it to shine. God knows we need all the candles we can get in these bleak times.

Diane Keaton in her Manhattan apartment with Buster, an Abyssinian, photographed by Jill Krementz in 1977
black & white photograph of young Diane Keaton smiling and standing next to a white refrigerator in a barren-looking kitchen. her cat Buster is crouched on top of the fridge playing with/swatting her hair in the upper right hand corner. she's wearing a long skinny white scarf with a dot-grid pattern, a high-neck white blouse with an ascot/kerchief around the neck, and a black blazer/skirt or blazer dress over what looks like a vest

that isn't true

America had the social gospel in 20th century history and LatAm evangelicals (padilla) did have their own version of liberation theology

Evangelicals don’t have a liberation theology.

I have the deepest respect for those priests doing our Lord's work in Chicago.

Faith without works is not faith at all.

And so if you call me a n*gger in front of a live audience, I am going to immediately engage in spiritual warfare, and call that demon from out of you, in Jesus' name.

I did it each time the right came after me. Prayed and sang all night when I landed on Campus Reform.

They do *not* own the faith.
ebonyteach.blacksky.app
Audience was traumatized. I was not. I'm not anyone's Superwoman but to quote the former VP, my people have always been clear about some things... although much has been forgotten these days.

We've HAD to be clear.

(And some of those practices are syncretic and preceded our forced conversion.)
ebonyteach.blacksky.app
I'm not Catholic, but when I was Zoombombed, I became very much a Black Baptist raised, Black COGIC collegiate, grad school crunchy woke Ann Arbor evangelical who knows how to get a prayer through AND who will engage in spiritual warfare.

More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

So yeah, no that's really what it's called. The Monstrance is usually only ever brought out on specific holy days for veneration during which it's displayed on the altar of the church (an altar btw which usually houses a holy relic)

Catholics believe it is actually Jesus, because transubstantiation

Too bad no journalist will ask a Catholic official—like say, the Vice President—to comment on ICE refusing to allow a priest to administer the sacraments. That sounds pretty anti-Catholic to me.

It’s been such a warm Fall here, but apparently that’s changing tonight!
But for now, we still have a few of the fancy sparrows visiting while they rest up before continuing their journey.
One of my favourites is the Harris’s Sparrow and this one was having a good drink!

A Harris’s Sparrow standing in a small creek with its reflection. Its striped tones of dark brown and tan are lit by the morning sun and the creek is a dark black. There are a couple pink rocks by the creek also catching the sun

Hey, sci-fi and fantasy folks, if you happen to know folks who are involved with various estates in the field, do tip them a hat about the Anthropic settlement. Agencies do not get $ out of the deal and may not remember to talk to estate clients. My agent was worrying about estates not being alerted
