Can they also get rid of the Opus Dei chapter pretending to be our Supreme Court?

Gareth Gore wrote the book on Opus Dei. Here’s his take:

like all the cardinals that were out in the Vatican streets hissing that Francis wasn't a legitimate pope are the kind of people who vibe with Opus Dei

they took Francis saying "okay no more human trafficking" like a personal attack

it is hard to overstate what a shit-stirring move this is

Opus Dei is hugely popular with the John Paul II & Benedict caucus. JP2 canonized their founder Josemaría Escrivá in 2002 and did a lot to establish them as a power base globally outside their original HQ in Spain

any incorporated nonprofit or organization governed by tax law has to file publicly available paperwork. I suspect the appeal of being embedded within the Catholic Church is at least in part about tax returns. but even former Opus Dei members were terrified to show Allen the official bylaws

Vatican journalist John Allen, my mother's celebrity crush of all crushes, wrote a book on them around the time The Da Vinci Code came out, and the detail that has stuck with me for 20+ years was that Opus Dei claimed their bylaws were confidential. no one would let Allen see them. DEEPLY SUS SHIT

Opus Dei's dark money ties are global

here's a review of a book that came out about it last fall from America Magazine (the national Jesuit publication) that gives a bit of a primer on their banking fuckery
Review: Opus Dei, inside and out
In 'Opus," Gareth Gore examines many seminal moments in the history of the controversial Catholic group Opus Dei, arguing that its secretive ways have allowed it to cover up serious scandals.

this basically means the clergy don't have jurisdiction over the lay people and the ability to order them around (it's legit Scientology levels of creepy how they do it) but I BELIEVE that what it would ALSO do is place a hefty roadblock between the lay people's money and the clergy at the top

it sounds like the proposal from Leo breaks the unified hierarchical structure into three separate chunks:

1. Opus Dei's own priests

2. normie priests who like the vibes and want to be in the cult's orbit without joining (maybe they can't if they're in another order? idk)

3. independent lay org

the central structural problem Francis attempted to fix is that the lay branch (which is, of course, where all the women are) were under the authority of the clerical branch, but the clerical branch had done a very neat job escaping being under ANYONE'S authority through their unique status

it's effectively a cult so I'm going to call it a cult because that's the easiest way to explain it. it's a cult which you can belong to either as a member of the clergy or as a lay person, which is what makes Opus Dei different from a religious order like the Jesuits or the Franciscans

so Opus Dei is what's called a "personal prelature"

what is that? good question. how many are there? only one. you mean they literally got a whole new categorization invented just for themselves and there's still no one in it? correct. isn't that creepy? beyond a doubt

let me whip out my Catholic-to-English dictionary attempt to parse what I think this new Leo edict will mean if he really goes through with it (we are reporting on speculation at present, just to be clear, albeit it seems to be informed speculation):

Opus Dei was ordered by Pope Francis to go through a whole reform process which they postponed after he died (because of "mourning." sure Jan) and have clearly been hoping that he'd get replaced by someone they could sway. I am guessing Francis saw that coming and corrected for it in his successor

I do not know this for a fact, but I am guessing that the Central and South American bishops conferences - where Opus Dei is like doing indentured servitude and ruining lives - are having way different conversations about them than the US conference where their big money flows to right-wing coffers

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

GUYS

GUYS THIS IS IS SEISMIC

GUYS I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU

OPUS DEI IS THE SCIENTOLOGY OF CATHOLICISM THEY ARE THE ONLY THING "THE DA VINCI CODE" GOT RIGHT THEY ARE AWFUL AND THEY ARE EVIL AND THEY HAVE ENORMOUS POWER AND THEY ARE INTEGRAL TO TRADFASH CATHOLICISM
BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV is set to effectively disband Opus Dei in the coming weeks.

This would be the most sweeping internal reform of his pontificate — and a dramatic continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy.
NEW: Pope Leo Set To Break Up Opus Dei
If Pope Leo does indeed approves a plan that effectively dissolves Opus Dei’s structure, it would be the most significant internal action of his short pontificate to date.

what's interesting here is that in this case I don't think he's Leo from Chicago as much as he is Leo from Peru

Opus Dei's fuckery in Argentina is what precipitated Francis finally cracking down on them in 2022. they were doing full-on human rights violations with no oversight
And the Pope from Chicago has effectively hamstrung them.

There's no separate dedicated account for the tariff revenue. They can rhetorically claim that's where it's coming from but that's meaningless, it's simply the Treasury's general fund, the vast majority of which is from income taxes.
To the extent anyone cares, the legality of tapping into tariff money is identical to the legality of tapping into federal income tax money, because they are both taxes that accrue to the treasury. Appropriations are still needed to spend it
Leavitt: "The president tapped into tariff revenue to keep WIC money going out the door. He found a creative solution to keep the troops paid. And rather than congratulate him for doing that, this unprecedented action to get our troops paid, Dems want to sue him for it. They're saying it's illegal."

1. In a groundbreaking lawsuit, fencer Dinah Yukich has become the first to our knowledge to sue an entity for capitulating to Trump's anti-trans executive orders in violation of state nondiscrimination law.

This kind of lawsuit could have huge ripple effects.

I wore a mask for most of SDCC and even more of NYCC this year. A bunch of folks I know got sick post-con. I didn’t! Masking helps keep you from getting sick. It’s not even about COVID for me. The only times I’ve been sick in the last year have been when the toddler brought a bug home from school.
