The pontiff met with a disgraced Opus Dei cardinal this past week - but has completely ignored pleas from victims of this abusive group for him to meet with them

What's going on?

There have been various signs of rapprochement between the Vatican and Opus Dei - the latest being the Cipriani meeting

Meanwhile, Leo refuses to meet victims of Opus Dei, who wrote to him asking for an audience in June. They never got a reply.

He's made his priorities clear

Francis wanted to come down hard on Opus Dei - but there are signs that Leo may go easy

Why?

Well, the Church's finances are in a dire state right now - it's possible he doesn't want to alienate the group, which has many wealthy and powerful members

It is also accused of abusing it members - Pope Leo is currently deciding what to do about the group

Why would Pope Leo meet with this guy?

Cipriani has long been a controversial figure: he hung out with military officers accused of human rights violations and was taped giving a speech to army cadets filled with obscenities

But, within hours of Francis' death in April, Cipriani unilaterally decided he would no longer comply

He was photographed standing over Francis' corpse defiantly in breach of the restrictions the dead pope had placed on him

The image provoked outrage

He finally went to the Vatican, which resulted in Pope Francis imposing restrictions on Cipriani

He was prohibited from wearing his cardinal robes and banned from public events

The message was clear: the Church didn't want to be associated with him

One reason might be US Opus Dei affiliated billionaires & GOP pedophile protectors, like Leonard Leo and Tim Busch. Cardinals were told before Pope Leo was elected that billions in donations were available if the right pope was elected 🤷‍♂️

It is kind of strange that if you want honest reporting on the Catholic Church, you pretty much have to go to a guy from Wigan who I used to talk to about bank capital trades. (buy Gareth's book btw, it's very good)

An Opus Dei priest told Hanssen not to turn himself in. Such a scandal might have been hugely embarrassing for the religious group. But that priest’s advice would have major consequences - and lead to people losing their lives.
