In fall 2022, ahead of the midterm elections, Garland opted to freeze both the classified documents and election investigations because of what some officials believed was his overly cautious reading of a DOJ policy not to take any public action close to an election.
Trump was not even on the ballot and had not yet declared his presidential candidacy for 2024.
But Garland nonetheless imposed the freeze.

The Heritage Foundation’s Bob Peters now recommends that if the US cannot develop the ability to conduct an underground nuclear test in Nevada within 3-6 months of an order to do so, it consider withdrawing from the 1962 Limited Test Ban Treaty and resuming open-air testing in Nevada or the Pacific.

The piece argues that the US must be ready to test nuclear weapons at the Nevada National Security Site within 3-6 months of being ordered to conduct a nuclear explosive test. 2/

Many argue that there is no technical reason to test. This is likely true—but it is also irrelevant. 3/

Such a test would occur if there were unforeseen “political” reasons why a President would want to test one as part of a signaling campaign during an acute crisis or even conflict. 4/

The purpose of such a signaling campaign that included a nuclear test would be 1) to demonstrate stake and that an adversary could not escalate their way out of a crisis or conflict through nuclear coercion—and ultimately, 2) to avoid a limited nuclear battlefield exchange. 5/

This may be a low-likelihood scenario—but it would be one in which the consequences are high. That is why it is so important to prepare for a possible test. 6/

If the Department of Energy is unable to have the Nevada Site ready for testing within 3-6 months, the US should consider withdrawing from the 1962 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. 7/

This would allow the US to conduct open air nuclear testing within the US or in the Pacific over open water or uninhabited atoll. 8/

Withdrawing from the Test Ban Treaty is not the preferred option, but it may be the required option should we be unable to conduct underground testing in a reasonable time. 9/

Final thought: no one is blase about walking away from arms control agreements--but if they no longer serve US national interests, then we must be willing, unfortunately, to consider walking away from them.

A witness in our case had ICE reject all her documents after using facial rec on her.

For her, tho, it seemed like nothing could make them accept that she has a right to be here.

Either way, a gov policy of not trusting gov-issued docs is going to violate lots of people's rights.

I told the officers nearest to me that I had all my paperwork, including my
U.S. Employment Authorization Card, my Social Security Card, my Florida-issued REAL
ID, and my Mexican Passport.
14. The officers walked me to my car and retrieved my paperwork.
15. The officers reviewed my paperwork and used what I believe was facial
recognition to confirm my identity.
16. At first, they seemed satisfied, but another officer (who appeared to be a
supervisor) said that they could not trust my paperwork because “the Biden Administration
made a lot of mistakes.”

After about 20 minutes in zip-ties, the officers decided that they would not let me go, and they replaced my zip-ties with handcuffs and shackles around my legs.
18. I was in shackles for several hours before the officers finally told me that
they were “giving me a second chance” and let me go.

I don't want to make people panic too much: the majority of work permit renewals ARE currently processed quickly enough that people would not lose their work permits if they filed for the renewal 180 days before it's set to expire (which is the best practice). But by no means in every case, though.
