Yes. I really appreciate Rebecca Solnit's observation that, "Because she’s pigeonholed as a feminist, I don’t think she gets enough credit as a literary stylist, for breaking out of category and genre.”

"The main theme of 'Woman & Nature' is the violence that the male of our species has perpetrated on the natural world, & on women, & how it would benefit everyone, & the planet we inhabit, to rethink the more dangerous advances of modernity & technology." Published in 1978 & still worth reading.

The "great unbundling"? As if unbundling has been beneficial for anyone but the techno-capitalist class.

"Architecture, like the university, has historically been a public good, something to be evaluated based on whether it contributes to human flourishing. Now it most often seems like part of a marketing ploy."

I guess this is the shock doctrine boomerang?
University of Chicago's "debt ballooned from $2.2 billion to $5.8 billion between 2006 and 2022—an increase of more than 250 percent, & the equivalent of 68 percent of the university’s total assets."

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

"But we do need the core aspect of them that makes Klein so uncomfortable: Russell’s expectation that those who relate to others as though they are not worthy of respect ought to be treated with the regard that orientation deserves." How we relate, regard, & orient ourselves to others is a practice.

"A key aspect of the way we lived with each other before these self-styled epochal developments [post-2020] involved exactly the “social shame and cultural pressure” that Klein and other influential voices now come to condemn"

The "bad apples" framing of the question is gross. Grateful for force of Hochul's anger. As she says, "This is not one person saying they love Hitler. It's a whole lot of people saying things that are so disgusting & so abhorrent that everybody from the president on down should condemn them."

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

This was my initial attempt to distill the piece down and connect king george's assault on liberties that led to the Declaration of Independence. If you're looking for #NoKings protests happening around the country see the website here www.nokings.org

A small comics panel, in the foreground, a drawing of a King ace of spaces playing card, upright but tilted a bit. The upside down king is drawn in the style of traditional playing cards, but with the features of King George III, and the upper portion resembles Trump. n the background, all dark, human figures, faceless prisoners, seated, packed tightly together, bodies merging into a sea of heads, with each figure’s head another’s back.

Flowing over the playing card are excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, written on little slivers of scroll – like fortune cookie strips. Each of these phrases refers specifically to the injustices imposed by the King (and connect to this current moment – references to Tariffs, to transporting us overseas…)
Captions running upper left to lower right.

Caption 1: "Our country was founded in discarding a king.”

Caption 2: “With tyranny once more upon us,”

Caption 3: “We must do it again.”

Strip along the bottom has #NoKings and my info: Nick Sousanis 5/25 @nsousanis.bsky.social

This is great news. We've hired the classicist Spencer Klavan to teach at New College of Florida. Goodbye gender studies; hello, Greek literature.

“…Many of the worst columnists & commentators have defended the actions of the Israeli state, while those afraid of the pro-Israel lobby's complaints simply resorted to both-sides rhetoric.”

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

Important that this article mentions Russell Vought's stated goal to treat federal workers badly: "We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected...When they wake up in the morning, we want them to not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains.” #IllnessPolitics
