Alice Wong in 2021 saying “No to Normal”: “A disabled person in a nondisabled world is forced to advocate for access, constantly having to provide proof & perform deservingness. When you’re not in the center, you are subject to being doubted & under suspicion of getting unfair special treatment.”

A withering editorial from the Cavalier Daily on the performance of UVA’s interim president, who now appears to be angling for the position:“Mahoney’s consistent deference to the Board serves as an indictment of his ability to empathize with and represent an outraged community in a time of peril.”
Excellent editorial by the student paper: “Perhaps the most obvious epitomization of Mahoney’s desire to be protected from, rather than to protect, the University community, was his decision to be accompanied by a police guard as he entered the Faculty Senate.” www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025...

Sorry, in the first post, I meant to say Gender Studies at SFSU: San Francisco State University. My bad.

Love that this article makes a case for Gender Studies. Prof. Kenney: "Very few students get a Women & Gender Studies degree for instrumental reasons...They're there because they want to be critical thinkers & politically engaged citizens."
Hello!

"These were first-generation college students, many from historically marginalized groups, who understood something administrators apparently didn't: they were being asked to pay premium prices for a cheapened product."

Purser quotes the Chair of WGSS at SF State Prof Martha Kenney, who says her students "were rightfully skeptical that regular use of generative AI in the classroom would rob them of the education they're paying so much for." This skepticism is what I am seeing among my WGSS students too.

"We are exporting the very labor of teaching & learning--the slow work of wrestling with ideas, the enduring of discomfort, doubt & confusion, the struggle of finding one's voice. Critical pedagogy is out; productivity hacks are in. What's sold as innovation is really surrender."

"The irony couldn't be starker: the very programs best equipped to study the social & ethical implications of AI were being defunded, even as the university promoted the use of OpenAI's products across campus." Shout out to UCSF Gender Studies mentioned here!

AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

These findings just out as RFK Jr’s anti-vax conspiracies become policy in the US. “These findings support proactive vaccination policies over reliance on infection-acquired immunity and inform rapid response strategies for future pandemic threats.” #IllnessPolitics
A study on 1.7 million people in Hong Kong shows superior hybrid immunity to Covid in people who got vaccinated before infection vs. people who got infected first. "Our findings are a direct rebuttal to arguments for natural immunity," the authors write. doi.org/10.1016/j.va...

The antidote to ICE & snow. Neighbors who look out for you.
I love my neighbors💜

Clearly blue suit/white shirt/open collar look to match drab set is required for the DealBook Summit. See also (more kinetic) tech co CEO video.

Prepping!

You definitely do! 😂

So glad they came through for you on your birthday! 🥳

When even conservatives begin to grasp the consequences of the destruction of higher ed: “We should be engaging in substantive intellectual battles, not generating outrage over an earned poor grade. We are not the party of participation trophies. Do the work & earn the grade, or fail on the merits.”
This is in fact the material point:
“The essay not only fails to meet basic college requirements — such as citing its primary source, the Bible — but fundamentally missed the assignment’s objective,” Tranquill said.

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

The White House’s insistence on using Sabrina Carpenter’s work and image to promote their crimes against humanity is also them appealing to their base, which already uses technology to try and humiliate and puppeteer the likenesses of women who have autonomy, success, and visibility in public

I have never been a Hochul fan, but she does seem to grasp that Dems need to present clear opposition to the Trump admin's necropolitics. Also, she's up for reelection next year & is reading the tea leaves.

Fast response from Hochul: "Today's national advisory votes were unnecessary changes & may have tragic consequences in some areas of the nation if doctors choose to stop giving newborns the standard hepatitis B preventive birth dose...Thanks to Gov Hochul, NY will continue to do the right thing."

NY State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald: "Newborn hepatitis B vaccination is a cornerstone of preventive care for infants, & our recommendations in NY State have not changed...The birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine is safe, effective & essential."

People say FIFA disgraced itself by having that little Trump ceremony. Habibi, it’s FIFA. People died building the Qatari stadium for the last World Cup and it held the World Cup in Russia before that.
