Don't say I didn't warn ya'll. A friend reminds me that 14 years ago when I was a Baby Melissa Reporter, I snuck into the world's largest rare earth mine in China. This is what I said at the time. It was a supply chain security issue then, as it is now.

Important article by @maxboot.bsky.social. I am hearing a great deal of both discomfort (from those still serving) and disbelief (from those now retired). Those who were sure the U.S. military would resist unlawful orders are now much less so.

This whole thread by @lscazzieri.bsky.social, and the paper it’s based on, are smart.

4) There is scope for a new transatlantic defence bargain, with the US reducing its involvement as Europeans assume primary responsibility for their security. The transition will require extensive coordination, but a disorderly process would only benefit our adversaries.

NEW TODAY: A deep dive on Tim Parlatore, Pete Hegseth’s longtime personal attorney.

He has a key role in Hegseth’s efforts to restrict news reporting in the Pentagon, and a history that includes defending alleged mobsters, accused war criminals, and President Donald Trump.

Tim Parlatore represented Hegseth when he faced sexual assault allegations, and he also counts alleged mobsters and President Donald Trump as former clients.

It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

Seeing multiple news orgs join together to reject the Pentagon's gag rules and now multiple airports refuse to air partisan govt propaganda.

There've been weeks when the wind is at authoritarians' backs. Let's hope these suggest a different wind direction this week. www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news...

Despite the government shutdown, paychecks will be going out to the U.S. military...and to the Coast Guard.

The administration has begun tapping funds from Trump’s tax breaks and budget law to pay for priorities during the shutdown, ensuring that the Coast Guard doesn’t go without paychecks.

Trump: "I had a very wealthy person who called -- a donor, a great gentleman -- and he said, 'if there's any money necessary, shortfall, for the paying of the troops, then I will pay it.' Meaning he will pay it. How about that?"

I get the general sentiment but aren't these reporters saying they'll keep covering DOD without official access, not that they are quitting the beat? Given the terms of the press agreement, hard to see how they could do actual journalism by signing.

Reps for CNN, Reuters, The AP, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic and NPR all say that journalists from their newsrooms are not signing the new paperwork about Pentagon access. Newsmax says it doesn't intend to sign, either — a potentially significant sign of MAGA dissension.

Congressional Dems and the Biden admin should have put more effort into passing post-Trump reforms. We need more aggressive reform than what was on offer then, but it could really have helped

15 years ago, we had “The Navy SEALs will fix American business”

Now we have “American business will fix the Navy SEALs”

Maybe we should stop trying to run successful basketball teams like fish hatcheries? Organizations are distinct, even irreconcilable.

Success is not dependent on a single key.
