Yes, and this decision should end forever the controversy over whether the Supreme Court conservatives are racist. Roberts leads a band of legal thugs destroying the Constitutional rights of minorities.

Why Universities should reject the Trump “compact.” It requires administrators to use so-called “neutral” language down to department level administrators. Will university administrators be unable to criticize racism and Nazi worship by Young Republicans?

The US tried patronage, and then rejected it for so-called neutral competence, which still is the default normative basis. But experts aren't neutral. There are disciplinary biases, agency biases, and administration is inherently political. New thinking is required.

Not sure we do. Replacement is the problem. What is the counter administrative system to patronage? Neutral expertise?

When we have an opportunity to rebuild it, we will need a different normative basis than neutral competence. I've proposed several possibilities over the past 30 years, but the question is what normative foundation for the civil service will be most broadly acceptable politically. Not sure yet.

The Supreme Court is about to impose a patronage state on us by destroying the civil service.

Teaching truthfully about slavery & its legacy is essential to full understanding of U.S. history. What the right wing does not see: It is a crucial path to understanding the potential of aspiration for democracy & justice; how vision, hope, bravery, & will can bend that arc of our common future.

Had an extended discussion at Montgomery’s New South Bookstore about my new book, The Southern Fault Line. We focused on the similarities between the Populist era in the 1890s in the South and the Trump autocracy today.
