I don't think this can really be blamed on HMT as much as I would like to. The national disease is subcontracting

Australia presides over a trove of crown resources the world needs.
Rather than subcontracting extraction & sale, we gift this lucrative earner to a cabal of tax minimising multi nationals & high net worth individuals…for a pittance.
It’s the price we pay for lazy, incompetent politicians

Top 6.

It was a period of change with staff leaving, subcontracting to outside companies let alone the footballing staff.

Any organisation would need time to adjust.

Amazon has long evaded unionization of its last-mile delivery drivers by subcontracting them to third-party companies.

Legislation introduced by socialist New York City Council member Tiffany Cabán could put an end to that.

EESC stresses: EU public procurement rules should promote direct jobs and include stricter regulation of subcontracting, by ensuring equal treatment, introducing joint and several liability, using dissuasive sanctions and limiting the length of subcontracting chains to a max. of 1 or 2 sub-levels.

📢We welcome the opinion of @eesc.bsky.social on the review of the European public procurement legal framework as it clearly recognises that EU public procurement rules should limit subcontracting, reducing the length of the chains to a maximum of one or two sub-levels.

(Don't get me started on how we as a society need to put waaay more people on salary and disincentivize subcontracting.)

Having had indirect dealings with SERCO in the past I’m of the opinion that they are a rentier business - taking a slice from the government contracts they win before subcontracting the real work out. I’d go as far as to say the only work they do is the work to win the contract. #r4today

Insider stock trades in Congress, crypto fund rug pulls, lobbying (legalized bribery), subcontracting schemes, family nepotism in business and politics, and revolving door corruption. Many have existed for decades, and Americans have become accustomed to them, but this is on a whole new level

Yeah, the Labour run DfT is so upset about Khan and TfL subcontracting mngt of London Underground that it is cited in yesterday's plan to help other regional authorities take over local rail 🙄

No one... NO ONE... is worth a $41 billion salary.

Fuck, I'll run the goddamn company for my current salary in a different industry, and I won't make idiotic decisions like subcontracting the timeless characters my customer base religiously adores to a dying AI-slop bullshit machine.
Disney has hiked prices and laid off hundreds of workers this year.

Yet Disney paid its CEO $41B in 2024. It just reported a 36% increase in net profits for parks and streaming. And it plans to double stock buybacks next year.

Remember this as Disney turns to AI.

Members of the European Parliament have today called to regulate abusive subcontracting and labour intermediation.

This is an important step to prevent the exploitation of workers by fraudulent companies and criminal networks.
We're outside the European Parliament this morning to call for an end to abuse in subcontracting and end gangmaster practices.

Is Chicago more likely to have empathy for folks who use micromobility devices to get to work, or for VC-backed delivery robots subcontracting for UberEats and DoorDash?

Limiting subcontracting chains is necessary and urgent.⛓️

⏰It's time to act!

🔴Myth: Let’s focus on enforcement first.
🔵FACT: It’s not either/or. We need more and better inspections. Limits on subcontracting lead to more transparency and effective enforcement.
