Alphabet's Waymo doesn't actually manufacture any vehicles themselves.
They partner with Jaguar Land-Rover for much of their ride-hailing fleet.
They recently announced they'll be using cars from Chinese auto manufacturer Zeekr for expansion.
Previously they used Chrysler Pacifica minivans.

One of the most insidious uses of technology is on the wage side. An issue brief from the Washington Center for Equitable Growth focused on how companies are using personal data to set worker pay, something first seen in the ride-hailing industry. Twenty AI consultants offer surveillance wage services to clients in logistics, manufacturing, retail, finance, education, transportation, technology, and health care, which is “the new Uber in a lot of ways,” said Veena Dubal, a law professor at the University of California and co-author of the report. The AI systems can adjust worker pay in real time, and offer different wages to people doing the same work. They can adjust wages based on performance data, customer feedback, and even factors off the job, such as “predictive analytics that attempt to determine a worker’s potential tolerance for low pay,” the report notes. Most of these wage-setting practices are opaque to workers or their bargaining representatives. “This is becoming normalized,” Dubal said. “It fundamentally undermines the well-worn and very American idea that hard work should result in higher pay.”

Uber pointed out that its 60,000 drivers in Massachusetts only work when they want to and make $33.48 an hour for active driving time. “Given that scale, it’s not surprising that there is a large number of Uber contractors who use SNAP,” a spokesperson said in a statement, noting that many drivers turn to the ride-hailing platform as a safety net when facing financial difficulties.

I think entirely too much about how California’s climate plan explicitly says that converting to EVs is not nearly enough to meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets so we need to reduce VMT 25% by 2030, and then we do basically nothing to try to achieve that goal

Contrary to popular belief, zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) alone are not enough to solve the climate crisis. The 2022 Scoping Plan illustrates that despite cleaner vehicles and low-carbon fuels, the path to carbon neutrality by 2045 also depends on reducing per capita VMT (the total passenger vehicle miles driven by an average person in California on any given day). To meet the carbon neutrality goal, the Scoping Plan proposes reducing VMT from 24.6 miles per day in 2019 to 18.4 miles by 2030 (a 25 percent reduction) and to 17.2 miles per day by 2045 (a 30 percent reduction). Approximately 30 percent of light-duty vehicles on the road in 2045 will still burn fossil fuels even with all new car sales being ZEVs by 2035 through implementation of CARB's Advanced Clean Cars Il regulations.? Additionally, driving, regardless of vehicle technology, will also continue to produce particulate emissions from brake and tire wear. it definitely has the potential to be profitable, but $3b/year is a lot of burn to overcome, on top of countless billions already burned, and ride hailing isn't a super high-margin business. They'll get there, but it's the kind of long, slow slog that tech investors hate more than life itself.
