I feel called out because I solidly agree with the 'pessimist' framing in each of your examples. I have to say I'd call it 'realist' not pessimistic.
I retain stubborn optimism that we can still do better, but the optimist framing feels unrealistic given how much faster we need to transition.

Indeed. I work backwards from Schmitt’s insightfully realist fascism to democratic socialism, not to his dark place. As in yes, liberalism can and does regress into metaphysics and theology out of a failure to conceive of its demands, opening the space for fascism..

I think this is my rubber-gloved leftist extrapolation from Schmitt and other legal theorists of the realist school like Ernst Fraenkel, which is that for liberalism to succeed it must be backed up by force (not the same thing as violence). The same for socialism..

i love how dreamlike the role of gender is anime/manga/vns & stuff like this. realist portrayals of queer life r fine and all but when my mind is wandering or sleeping the deeper parts of my brain r playing w gender roles like legos. okay boba fett lego guy ur the school appointed crossdresser now

What kills me is that when AI first hit the streets- one of the FIST THINGS I saw being posted in art spaces was FUCKING HYPER-REALIST, L*LI slop!
Not that I need more reason to believe this- but AI is easily one of the biggest blights to befall humanity in terms of content creation!

These days I identify as a realist-materialist and anti-woo, but the Sufi/Gurdjieff end of mysticism has some interesting insights on intentionality, and how on trying to do *anything* real in shitty material reality is fighting against gravity, and/or attracts the attention of malevolent forces

Of course, that’s one of the dreams of modernist literature, whether realist or fantastic: that the more stories we tell each other about such tragedies, the fewer of them there will be. We’re still waiting for the results.
