THE chief executive of embattled Otago Polytechnic is leaving the organisation. Megan Po ¯tiki’s departure was confirmed yesterday by new Otago Polytechnic Council chairman John Gallaher. ‘‘Together with my fellow council members, I would like to sincerely thank Megan for her dedication and commitment to Otago Polytechnic and for the work she has undertaken to steer the organisation back to a more viable and sustainable position,’’ he said. Otago Polytechnic is going through a range of restructuring to address a $10 million deficit. On Tuesday, Vocational Education Minister Penny Simmonds announced the membership of the new council, which replaces an establishment advisory group which made ‘‘in principle’’ decisions ahead of the polytechnic’s return to autonomy next year. It will be part of a new federation, anchored by the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and including the Universal College Of Learning. Mr Gallaher said the group had begun the recruitment process for a chief executive of the ‘‘new standalone entity of Otago Polytechnic’’. An announcement on the role was expected next week.

(born Farrokh Bulsara - Stone Town, Sultanate of Zanzibar (now Tanzania) .
Vocalist, piano, guitar, songwriter: QUEEN (1970-91), solo. One of the greatest vocalists, showmen, and songwriters in rock history. Though somewhat of a flamboyant “diva” perhaps to mask his insecurities (foreign-born outsider when his family moved to the UK - though born a British citizen and he also had four extra teeth in his upper palate causing a pronounced overbite and much embarrassment - he never had his teeth fixed fearing it would affect his voice). In his teens, his family left Zanzibar (due to a revolution) and relocated to the UK where he enrolled at Isleworth Polytechnic earning a degree in art. He designed Queen's original coat of arms logo. Mercury's official cause of death (age 45) was bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS. Mercury's close friend, Dave Clark (of The Dave Clark Five) was at his bedside when he died and was the one who notified Freddie's parents of his passing. His legacy rose to unexpected new heights via the award-winning (though flawed) biographic movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”. ~ HH
