Can confirm. The people who came out of the fire service and now work at ICC/NFPA are conservative in a true sense, and they *do not* like single stair. “Personnel is policy” as they say.

🔋Charging something big like an e-bike, scooter, or power tool with a lithium-ion battery?
✔ Charge outside
✔ Use a flat, dry area
✔ Make sure it’s secure
It may be the end of #FirePreventionWeek, but safety doesn’t stop here—stay fire-safe every day.

As to the NFPA president’s claim that single-stair is being pushed by developers who already make enough money – a bit hypocritical coming from somebody who spent 30 years working in the electrical industry he now regulates, and who now makes $1.1 million a year doing it

NFPA responds to this Pew study showing modern multi-family housing is safer than detached houses with a column attacking single-stair reform.
Affordability arguments are "dubious" and pushed by "special interests" — citing high profits for… single-family homebuilders.

Incidentally, the author (president & CEO of NFPA) used ChatGPT to find that NAHB "record profits" article, as shown by the ?utm_source=chatgpt.com query parameter in the URL.

It would be wild if there was, perhaps, an entire program mediated by the EPA and OSHA to regulate highly hazardous materials that was also extended to include refineries and an organization had recommended the NFPA reclassify refinery products. Unfortunately such a program does not exist!

Copenhagen's first metro line (M1-M2) followed the German BOStrab regulation, which requires an emergency exit every 600 m, with fixed stairs and elevators.
On the Cityringen (M3-M4), most intermediate shafts have been shelved and compensated with other safety measures.

Most fire safety laws and regulations, including the NFPA 130, allow for the use of escalators as means egress, with some varying restrictions. Firefighters almost everywhere err on the conservative side of what is or isn't safe enough.

Yes. A million times… we’ve actually taken them out to make the Elevator inspector happy and put them back in when they leave so the Fire Marshal will approve it haha.
Luckily, the new NFPA 13 code finally did away with them and new buildings will start going to that soon.

Found out today about another four-story, single-stair building in Burlington, VT (the state adopts NFPA 101, not IBC Ch. 10, for egress). It's a 16-unit building for families who were formerly homeless or at risk of homelessness www.srhlaw.com/evernorth-an... www.duncanwisniewski.com/278-main

I do not believe it is possible to create a more fitting recruitment film for the Russian Armed Forces.
Side note for those who know... Any hospital in the US would be cited by JCAHO for violating the egress requirements of the NFPA. And, JCAHO could care less if there was an ongoing war.

NYC: we need a ventilation building for air intake and smoke extraction, so it's at least 40 feet above street level. Actually, we need two for each station.
NFPA 130: extraction/intake should be a couple of feet above street level, so one can't park above it.

Jurisdictions often have varying requirements which always involves referencing multiple codes (NFPA 30, NFPA 110, IBC ect). The generator requires extensive design coordination by the architect, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.

I have a theory that the European EN 12101-6 standard produces more reliable systems than the NFPA 92 standard we use in the U.S., and that’s one reason they trust them in Europe as a substitute for a second stair and we do not.

Here’s an NFPA report about it. Cooking caused 44% of reported home fires and 42% of reported home fire injuries in the U.S. in 2017-2021, but only 18% of home fire deaths. www.nfpa.org/education-an...

Okay this is fun – sprinkler visit intervals in NFPA 25 (www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-a...) vs. Department of Defense’s standard (PDF pg. 50: www.wbdg.org/FFC/DOD/UFC/...). Basically, NFPA makes you pay a sprinkler guy to come monthly, while the DOD only sends one annually
what, the frequencies? look up DOD UFC 3-601-02 and compare to NFPA 13 ITM. Thats an org with sufficient capital to say “hmm … doesn’t work for us”

I think the NFPA report is going to be clutch. 25 years as a firefighter gives me massive pause with single stairwell design. The pressurization that can result is hard to overcome.
