Every single barrier to vaccination leaves more and more people unprotected.
Furthermore, the U.S. presently doesn’t have monovalent vaccines for MMR.
Finally, if anti-vaxxers want kids to get fewer shots because of unnecessary fears of aluminum, why do they want to expose them 3x as much?

I spoke to @melodyschreiber.com @theguardian.com along with @pauloffit.bsky.social & @jasonlschwartz.bsky.social about the MMR going monovalent.
We all agree: following Andrew Wakefield's advice to "break up the vaccines" is unnecessary, pointless, & will only prevent kids from getting vaccinated

Concerns that three separate shots would be more costly and time-consuming, and keep kids from being vaccinated

CDCs demand to break up MMR vax into separate monovalent shots is public health malpractice.
These vax are widely used worldwide. The 2 manufacturers (Merck & GSK) could easily decide to abandon the US market rather than take a big financial risk on clinical development & licensure of separate shots

Andrew Wakefield claimed without evidence in a retracted study that there was a link between autism and the combination MMR vaccine -- but not separate shots.
Wakefield filed a patent for his own separate shots the year before the study was published.

“Kennedy is very effective at using obviously untrue, pseudoscientific garbage to justify wildly irresponsible and dangerous health policies. Lying about monovalent MMR will be one more feather in his cap, with the next generation of Americans paying the price.”
I wrote a thing about how this split the MMR up into monovalents is bullshit that Andrew Wakefield cooked up. It will be used to strip access to the MMR.

10/Why the myth persists:
- It sounds “cautious,” which people equate with safe.
- Anti-vaccine groups misuse technical terms like monovalent to sow doubt.
- Rapid COVID-19 vaccine updates created confusion about how formulation changes work.

- Monovalent vaccines protect against one strain or pathogen (e.g., Hepatitis B).
- Multivalent (combination) vaccines protect against several at once MMR, DTaP, or HPV-9.
Multivalent ≠ “rushed cocktail.” It’s a deliberate, data-driven design that broadens protection safely and efficiency.

There is no evidence that breaking up the MMR shot would make the immunization safer or more effective.
The reason why the acting CDC director wants to separate the MMR shot is to discourage people from getting vaccinated by creating larger hurdles.

Japan tried this. They suspended MMR in 1993 and used monovalent vaccines.
Result: coverage plummeted, measles and rubella cases shot up, they had multiple measles outbreaks (one with >100k cases), and they then switched back to MMR.

I'd normally revel in this pettiness, except this IS actually about vaccines.
MMR has a tiny risk of febrile seizures.
Risk can't be reduced because Tylenol causes autism*
ACIP recommends monovalent M,M,R instead
There are no monovalent M,M,R vaccines
*No it doesn't

The MAHA anti-vax contingent is upset about the now infamous Tylenol announcement. Apparently the wrong kind of unhinged pseudoscience. They have standards!
We’re gonna take a petty moment to enjoy this infighting. 🍿

So weird, on so many levels.
Moderna Covid-19 vaccines have been called SPIKEVAX for a while now, since they got full approval beyond EUA, it isn't unique to the new monovalent XBB formulation out now.
I got my vax at CVS today, and they didn't even want to see my vac card, told me it was irrelevant

An adjuvant would help with a more robust immune response but I don’t understand what you mean by Novavax not being sequence dependent. My understanding is that it is a monovalent booster based on the spike protein from the Omicron XBB lineage.

The new XBB ‘monovalent’ vaccine didn’t come online until w/c Monday 2nd October. Prior to that people were given the previous bivalent one. Here’s a record of mine. It’s better than nothing, but I’ve already seen calls for people to be given the option to have the new one as well now.
