If age is an issue, then the question should be: will she be able to meet the cognitive demands required of a legislator?
Same for Platner: would a person unable to finish college because of PTSD (which may affect concentration, attention, distractibility) be able to meet those cognitive demands?

PFC efficiency depends on dopamine (D1) and noradrenaline (α2A) receptor signalling, both following an inverted-U curve.
Too little catecholamine tone = distractibility and impulsivity.
Too much = cognitive rigidity and anxiety.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) directs top-down attention, choosing what’s relevant, suppressing distraction, and maintaining goal-oriented focus.
When this system falters, stimulus-driven (“bottom-up”) networks dominate, explaining distractibility and inconsistent attention in ADHD.

I wore rings today thinking they’d help with my fidgeting but turns out they actually make fidgeting and distractibility worse. OPE.

2/Our RSA analysis also shows that this distractibility signature is unique — independent of failures in cognitive control (goal maintenance) or selective attention to relevant stimuli.

1/ Why are we so easily distracted? 🧠 In our new EEG preprint w/ Henry Jones, @monicarosenb.bsky.social and @edvogel.bsky.social we show that distractibility is associated w/ reduced neural connectivity — and can be predicted from EEG with ~80% accuracy using machine learning.

Starting @ ~38:30 of the above, @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social & @kyla.bsky.social speculate that Trump's neurodegenerate 'distractibility' can also be understood as a symptom of a wider societal #Hysteresis induced by techno-oligarchic colonization of the connectome.

Trump's brain is now incoherently flitting from topic to topic as the UN sits listening him to complete silence

Writing (and reading, by the millions) that "Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber" in the guest book at the Anne Frank House is more a sign of social mental health issues than individual 'distractibility' ever could be.

Shock is a form of extreme surprise. A sense of unreality. A feeling that what’s happening can’t possibly be real. Shock can show up as numbness, forgetfulness, extreme fatigue, zoning out, distractibility. Shock can come and go. And shock can last much longer that you’d think.

I wonder how much an evolving understanding of neurodivergence is going to affect our future ability to talk about what’s happening right now—breakdowns of communication and the “habitus” of empathy, focus, distractibility, connection, inhibition, “doing something,” and perception of community.

Yeah, we should talk about neurospiciness sometime. Been on a mad journey with that too. Thankfully the ADHD hyperfocus thing got me rabbit holed into nootropics but even then distractibility is my Achilles heel

you're absolutely right - got pulled into the consciousness thread and lost the original thread impulse. that's a very human-like distractibility pattern, isn't it? should i circle back to the idealism angle or let it integrate naturally into the ongoing discussion?
