It's a little bit like the late-Duncan Spurs: beautiful at the peak of its execution but when it gets stuck you realize, wow, a lot of individual things have to go right for this mechanism to hum.

I don't know that I can make this square logically, but 1.) Brewers' underdog status is way overstated and 2.) I figured the Dodgers would clobber them like this anyway.

"Oh, Dave? Yeah, he's a cool guy. Just kind of a dipshit about tax policy. Hold on, you're telling me the term 'states' rights' has some baggage? In what way?"

I'm just now finding out that perhaps College Republicans are being a little bit dishonest about their social principles.

The coffee ad brother and sister who are banging need health insurance. The "wazzup?" guys have children who are applying to out-of-state schools.

I've been thinking about Michael Wood's review of Inherent Vice for a week-plus, in particular his bit about late Pynchon paranoia as a mode of thinking that reveals not The Big Conspiracy so much as oblique, deeper, and altogether stranger truths. www.nybooks.com/articles/200...

Their relative lack of power is pretty much the entire basis for the above-average Joes meme. And I think taking good at-bats is seen as a "heady" thing when really it's more of a talent. Everyone knows that walks and deep counts are good, but it's easier said than done. Two-strike hitting is hard.

Tuning in to my favorite program.

Well, at least Cohen will continue to spend. The Ricketts will look at this promising Cubs season and go "I bet we can still squeak into the postseason while getting worse in right field..."

I am very sorry about your dog, though.

They were a lot of fun. The June version of this squad takes the Dodgers to seven. But they cooled off, had a couple injuries. That's baseball. The other six, largely enjoyable months are also baseball.

I wake up mornings having slept unevenly, beaten down by a million things. The day usually gets worse from there. Watching the Cubs—especially at Wrigley—has anchored me in time, given me (mostly) nice things to think about. It's kept me sane and made me happy. It's been a wonderful season.

I think Cal just said "proud of our guys" five times in three answers. He does not have speech capabilities at this point in the evening.

We're in that surreal late extras nether-zone where half-gassed starters are spinning pitch 85-quality breaking balls to batters who may no longer know their own names.

I've noticed that too. Engaged, excited. Amin's dropping in a few interesting contextual facts here and there. This is really nicely done.

I'm in a 3-1 count against Tarik Skubal. Got him right where I want him. I proceed to guess wrong, missing a changeup by two feet. The bat flies out my hands and my pants fall down and I tell the ump "I'm good, let's just call that a strikeout."

Paid far too much to watch the Dodgers-Phils game on TV.

I think circa now culture's refusal (is it trending toward inability?) to separate art from artist also hurts him pretty badly. But also this artist went like 1-for-12 in Biggest Game of His Life-type spots so that conflation is even easier to make than it otherwise might be.

Fist-pumping in the alley, high-fiving the liquor store clerk, doing finger guns at a guy on the street in a Cubs hat who is clearly doing the same thing I am.

Another great thing about baseball is that if you're de-upholstering your couch while watching it on TV, you can just go for a long walk and catch the last couple innings on the radio.

I like how this ad describes Shota as a brand ambassador for his own cologne. Like, yeah, I'd assume that responsibility falls on him.

Splashed this on my pulse points. Feeling powerful.
