The economic case for methane action is clear.
- Global methane abatement yields large net global economic benefits.
- The benefit-cost ratio of methane action is at least 3—rising to more than 6 when health cobenefits are included.

We're mostly moving in the wrong direction but as the recent talk by Paul Behrens I flagged confirms, food is a key area where we, in the Global North, have full agency to move in the right direction & reduce harm. Meat/dairy won't be big business if we leave them out, with many other cobenefits!

Depends how you look at it and define both costs and benefits. Certainly there are near term cobenefits, but to the public they're not obvious and thus harder to sell. For example Less ICEVs means less air pollution, means lower health system related costs and greater productivity.

And if we are matching with agricultural land - examples from NZ show how it can work - rather than land being sold and primarily used only for solar - incentivise mixed farming so farmers own and have benefit return from solar as a 'mixed crop' www.farmersweekly.co.nz/technology/f... #cobenefits
Farms wanted to help trial solar systems
Installations will be subsidised and monitored to help shape future of on-farm energy generation.

We may have liked that, but in the long run it did neither, and burned relationships along the way. Maybe if the election went the other way, all the cobenefits would have become the next New Deal but if it was a red state strategy it failed. Agree with your media point.

Slashing emissions via individual actions:
👉 Less or no flying, more active and public transport
👉 Shifts to plant-based diets (with cobenefits for nature, pollution, water use, public health, etc)
👉 Better insulated, more efficient electrified buildings with solar panels if possible

I promote every way of reducing our impacts, but diet shift is key because most people in the Global North can do it at any time, with multiple cobenefits (incl. cost: shorturl.at/mOxPT).

Fair enough, especially in areas most prone to heat waves. It's also the cheapest and doesn't preclude later changes (including expanding on top of buildings to save land, rather than horizontally). But solar PV and green roofs also reduce heat whilst bringing other big cobenefits!

Seems like they focus on longer-term system changes. Do they weigh immediate/ short-term impacts (especially cobenefits to communities), and if so, how much weight do those carry? And how do they demonstrate impact to donors if the main impacts are far into the future?
