I keep thinking about my intro to Roman archeology class in which we had to write an essay on how the building projects of each of the Julio-Claudian emperors reflected their personalities. Then I heave a heavy sigh.

No it was pretty underwhelming, the OpenAI offices are cool, quite open and fairly large and you can walk between and around the two main buildings, but Anthropic is just a half-hidden lobby downtown without even a single claudian characteristic to it.

Agrippina the Elder
(Vipsania) Agrippina the Elder was a prominent member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. She was the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and Augustus' daughter, Julia the Elder. Her brothers Lucius and Gaius Caesar were the adoptive sons of Augustus, and were his heirs until their deaths in AD 2 and 4, respectively. Following their deaths, her second cousin Germanicus was made the adoptive son of Tiberius, Augustus' stepson, as part of the succession scheme in the adoptions of AD 4. As a result of the adoption, Agrippina was wed to Germanicus in order to bring him closer to the Julian family.

#EpigraphyTuesday offers us a shattered and recomposed slab of Luni marble from the #Forum of #Augustus in #Rome. Its #inscription has been somewhat devoured by the human termites who ran the lime kilns but is easily legible as a statue dedication to #Drusus #Germanicus. #AncientBluesky 🏺

His Hadrian had a slight touch of Claudian hesitation, so the fact that I’d devoured that series as a kid helped hugely in getting his timbre right

One of the Julio-Claudian Emperors was nicknamed after the little boots he wore as a child on the march with the army, and we still call him by that name today.

More ancient Rome candy trivia:
- Twizzlers were the most popular item at the Colosseum snack bar
- One of the reasons for the fall of the Julio-Claudian dynasty is that Nero banned peanut M&Ms
- There was a goddess of biting wintergreen Lifesavers to make sparks. Her name was Fulgora.

Though after the chaotic end of the Claudian dynasty (Nero), The Empire floundered until General Vespasian took power and started the Flavian Dynasty (and built the Colosseum for the people on the site of Nero's imperial pleasure palace). There is still hope.

In celebration of finding, after two months, the already-opened packet of exotic Eastern spices (ex-Kalustyan's on Third Ave in "Curry Hill") which I had secreted in Livia's ancient Maxwell House Instant jar (background, which formerly held her Claudian pie-beans), Antonia & I had the Betz wine.

The Roman Theatre at Faesulae (modern Fiesole, Italy) has a seating capacity of 2,600-3,250. It was began during the Augustan period (27 BC- AD 14), with the scene added during the Claudian period (AD 41-54) and renovations during Septimius Severus (AD 193-211). #RomanSiteSaturday
