personally however I would just have said that my friend's wife and I were organizing some kind of surprise birthday party for him, surely there's a compromise between 'noble sacrifice' and 'ballsdeep, your honor'

Enrigue's "You Dreamed of Empires" has some really interesting reflections on this, from the perspective of a Spaniard arriving in Tenochtitlán. Are we sure the ritual violence there was experienced as more central or omnipresent than the auto da fe was back in Seville?

Yeah, the degree to which Mexica culture ritualized it and make it ideologically central is unique AFAIK. But I'm also skeptical that we fully understand the worldview and potentialities of a culture that was cut off suddenly and had its memories transmitted mostly through its conquerors

No argument about being bonkers, but it's also comparable to other empires that endured. After Spartacus the Romans crucified 6000 slaves along the main road into Rome. And after one battle during the Warring States period, hundreds of thousands of captives were supposedly buried alive.

More importantly though I had no idea Napoleon was familiar with the Fenian cycle??? My mind is blown

I've never been totally satisfied with the explanation for the singular / plural forms of Os. Wiktionary says this (but no cite) - I would like to read this argued more fully
Screenshot of part of the Wiktionary page for the Old English section of the word "os":

"The genitive plural ēsa (attested in ēsa gescot 'the shot of the ēse') and names such as Esegar display i-mutation, despite being a u-stem. This is likely a fossilization from an earlier stage between Proto-West Germanic *ansu and early Old English *ons, in which i-mutation was applied to the attested declined forms due to the word’s archaic meaning, rather than its active usage."

One of my projects I need to get back to is dining at a restaurant that specializes in cuisine of each Mexican state (without leaving LA county)

This is not commentary or connected to the news or anything. Just a poem that blew me away and now I think about it at least once a month.

During the first year of Covid I rented an apartment in Berkeley with a view like this out of one window. This brings me back the memory of many weird lonely days that year, brightened for a few minutes by a gorgeous sunset.

Sunset last night behind San Francisco Financial District, as seen from Emeryville, California.

You can get a waterproofing sealant spray for leather shoes. It does well for a little while in a light rain, but I've never tried it with a heavy downpour or going through puddles.
