Occurring 49 years and 5,600 miles apart, the #ToxicLegacy of mining disasters in Aberfan & Mariana unites two communities in struggle.

In 2023, campaigners from @mab.org.br visited Aberfan in Wales to build solidarity between communities who've fought to hold mining companies to account.

I was seventeen years old and still at school on 21 October 1966, the day before half term, when a huge coal waste tip, unable to absorb weeks of heavy rain, high on the hills above the Welsh valleys'village of Aberfan, collapsed, engulfing the village school

On his ninth birthday, Julian Cope was at his grandmother's house in rural Wales. That same day, 116 children and 28 adults were killed just a few miles away in the Aberfan disaster: www.theguardian.com/music/2008/a...

Funny what people remember, 1965 Capel Celyn drowned for the benefit of Liverpool, 1966 Aberfan disaster ,community badly let down by Wilson's government in the aftermath, seems like nothing changes, Labour UK has always worked for the benefit of England

With Halloween in mind, this is the Aberfan disaster in South Wales in 1966. Huge mounds of debris from coal mining broke loose and like mud it flowed through Aberfan killing 144 people...

Rich, white, noble, elderly people fail upward. Thatcher had been doing it since Aberfan.

The King approves of Farage and his sleazy Russian rubles more than Abdrew.

The contempt the British state has held people in: a series. In 1966 after the Aberfan coal tip disaster killed 144 people including 116 children the National Coal Board denied wrongdoing & offered £50 compensation per dead child; raising this to £500. www.economist.com/britain/2025...

I was born in 1961. My formative years were shaped by Ian Brady, Myra Hindley, and Aberfan: my parents were reluctant to let me out of their sight until I went to university.

On the mountainside above the village of Aberfan, a large cross was laid out. It was made up of hundreds of wreaths from around the world.

I lived in Wales for a while and remembering Aberfan was a big thing every year. I know there were a couple of plays. And a rather good episode of The Crown.

The one thing that the British state is really good at is making sure that those at the top never face justice for the decisions/criminal behaviour they engage in. From Aberfan to Ibrox and from Hillsborough to Grenfell the same tactics-Delay, deny and smear for decades. #bbclaurak
