What I love is the silent interaction — it has all the joy of being lost in a book all summer long, with the bonus of having an audience for my own stuff too.

I mean sure but they also treat this stuff like a secret code and it's not. They're popular books that have been made into movies or TV series multiple times. The first LOTR movie was in 1978. There's David Lynch's Dune, the ScFi Dune miniseries, and the recent Dune movies with Zendaya.

I finished Of Monsters and Mainframes. It is small press and wound up being more queer than anticipated, so not off brand for me at all.
I LOVED it and think anyone who enjoys both SciFi and classic monsters should go read it.

I really can't recommend Shashka's stuff enough. Man is a master at making bizarre, outlandish scfi full of heart and soul.

I suspected that might be the reason.
It was your own definition of Macross as an Isekai. That you can warp/teleport to different points in space and journey through space to different planets. I was pointing out this would apply to most scfi. Also most Isekai is very different to that.

Scfi game on a space station but you never get any gun that isn't an antique muzzleloader. The game never provides any sort of justification for or acknowledgement of this fact.
game design experiments to see how angry i can get FPS gamers mad at me, starting with "put a bunch of ammo type in game for a gun that never actually shows up"

Yeah I'm old. I read a fair bit of scfi when I was young, and I really don't see AI as being a good thing. Then, add the environmental problems right now AND stealing people's water right out of their wells. Not good.
