Truly many fantastic "wizard" books out there that aren't fueling bigotry.

Terry Pratchett, The Rithmatist, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, His Dark Materials, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Artemis Fowl etc.

If you are gonna get into the StormLight shenanigans, go for it. They are long, parts get… rambly. Try the Rithmatist, see if you like how he writes & then plot out how to tackle that hydra.

Well I did read the Hunger games series for the first time, so PROBABLY Catching Fire, but outside of that I’d pick The Rithmatist. But I’m halfway through How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, and I’m really enjoying it so far. Could be number one if it stays good!

Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson. His (currently) stand-alone middlegrade fantasy novel The Rithmatist is also great

The Rithmatist also has a similar bit

Der Rithmatist ist auch sehr spannend, halt ein komplett anderes Magie System als man sonst so kennt.
Und die Reckoners lohnen sich auch.

I've not done stormlight just yet.

I've done Elantris, both Mistborn eras, Rithmatist, book 1 of Alcatraz, and Warbreaker.

I'm currently working through The Wheel of Time to get to the ones he co-wrote (I'm a completionist) hahaha.

Sanderson has this weird obsession with currency having a practical purpose. Coins in Mistborn. These weird clock dial dollars in Rithmatist. Spheres in Stormlight.

He seems, if only subconsciously, annoyed that money doesn’t DO anything.

Absolutely pumped about how these modded tokens came out for A Place for All My Books (the game came with one side having lovely decorative foiling and the other side blank. The blank side called out to me and one printer and some modpodge later, here we are!)

Always open to more recs!

He loves Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking, Rithmatist, The 133th Assistant Librarian, Artimus Fowl and he's starting some Pratchett too!

Graphic novels like Lightfall, Amulet and investigators got him started.

Finished The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson today

at first, it felt like he watched a couple episodes of Full Metal Alchemist and decided to make a magic system around the alchemy circles

But it was quite enjoyable to listen to a simple fantasy story again. I really love Sanderson's magic systems

Wow, I didn't know he did that. Jeez!

(Personally, I have him set to: ignore until there's a Rithmatist sequel. Only thing I want out of the man.)

The Rithmatist is interesting, IMO, for being a bit better about this.

Every year, my daughter and I check the "State of the Sanderson" for an update on a sequel to "The Rithmatist" but it is always several years out, in the queue behind a dozen other projects. We think we might be the only people who check for that specific reason.

That bothers me too, as well as recos that are mostly fighting with not much school. Nothing comes as close while also vastly improving on the inspo as The Scholomance to me (as others said), but Vita Nostra and The Rithmatist have some of the juice.

Some bookmarks I made for the children's section last year, for reasons.
