2025 Micro-reviews:
Interstellar Pig by William Sleator

One of the earliest gamelit books. For reasons of their own, an eclectic group of aliens teach a young human a complex board game that may – or may not – be more real and more serious than it seems.

Something very unfortunate happened for my husband today.

A child whose ears had recently been pierced lost an earring.

Whereupon, I pulled out my old piercing stud I'd kept for decades, sterilized it, and popped it in.

Packrat tendencies SO vindicated right now. Keep everything forever. YESSS.

Bioshifter by Natalie Maher

A lifetime of repetitive dreams turns out to be the “slow burn” part of a transdimensional transformation process for a girl who thought she was human.

This is adorable. I also love how most of the characters have fancied themselves up at least slightly and Hornet is just like "Whatever, I was born fancy."
We’re deeply honored that HADES II is in the running for Game of the Year and more at #TheGameAwards tonight, especially since we’re in the company of such an amazing group of wildly different and beautiful games.

Congratulations to all our fellow nominees — we salute you!! 🙏👏

2025 Micro-reviews: 1% Lifesteal by Robert Blaise
A poor young man is scraping by at the bottom of a stratified society. He’s “lucky” enough to find a possible path to bettering his life, but the road ahead is painful and dangerous.

Shrinkflation is always infuriating, but it's extra infuriating to have a recipe that calls for "1 package (16 oz)" and every package on the store shelf is between 14 oz and 15.5.

Recently made banana pudding and had to get multiple packages of three "1 package" ingredients. Came home seething.

Discount Dan by James A. Hunter – A guy teleported to a malfunctioning dungeon immediately ends up as a spectator in a superpower battle. He’s lucky enough to grab a few discards that might just be the tools he needs to survive.

Player Manager by Ted Steel – Guy secretly gets FIFA game powers in real life. It sounds terrible, but it’s actually great. I don’t even like sports.

Man, fairytale retellings are such comfort reads for me. I tend to keep them on my TBR after I discover them as an "in case of emotional emergency, break glass" situation.

Anyone know of a medical book or website targeted to authors or writers? I want to hurt my characters and save them realistically, but my confidence level at properly interpreting medical papers whose intended audience is "qualified surgeons" is low.

Game at Carousel by Rob M. Lastrel –

The town of Carousel is alive, forcing those it traps to act out horror stories in order to survive. In a storyline, even death can be survived, as long as your companions finish the story successfully.

Oldest: Didn't you and Dad finish that game? Like all the achievements.

Me: Yeah, I can't explain why I'm doing this when I'm not accomplishing anything.

Oldest: Well... it's not like you were really accomplishing anything before.

Rich guy buys all the early access slots for new MMO. Everyone rightfully resents him for this. Somehow a really fun story, probably because the MC is heckled the whole time by a sapient axe companion.
