I just had my weekly teletherapy session via zoom on my phone and started to take my therapist on a tour of my apartment to look for my glasses when kindly informed me they were on my head. (I had taken them off to read; I need bifocals but the ophthalmologist thought we could away without them.)

hello melancholic haunted girlies (so like....75% of you who follow me) do i have the book for you!
a copy of 'the unlikeness of things' the cover is six repetitions of the same shot of a pair of glass windows, each image closer to nightfall I wander the garden, feeling what's there, all sky and light, sounds of a saw somewhere in one of the worksheds set back from the path, in slight counterpoint to the wind, and as the clarity of things intensifies my gait, giving me something to grasp and hold onto, the saw stops. I walk, I dream. It's one of those birdless mornings. Stillness hovers in the branches, such emptiness, unsettling in its thickness. I read, I daydream. I am both here and there. My ideas are unsealed like lids and tossing them in the air is a sort of exercise. They float, light. I sit before my cup of tea and look beyond the cup into the space inside my skull which is also before me. I sit, finishing my tea, steeped in these thoughts, traces of memories and halftone images, I know I am forgetting something, but what? There is the mottled mass of shadow, like an indivisible moment, it's a normal morning with its share of routines, but it seems to drift off course and I can't stop it. Oh yes, I know, I need to buy grill cleaner to clean the grill outside, and what else? It's the kind of day where I forget words, drop things and wonder what I came into the room for because there's a good reason I'm here, I keep telling myself it's just a matter of time before I remember because I always remember once I retrace my steps. Things communicate one way or another. I think of my fingers that sometimes stiffen like wood. Which is why I drop things so often, each day brings a new cracked cup. The window. I think I see a bird. Out the corner of my eye, I see something rise outside the pane, it moves like a bird but might not be one. I look and it's a tit with yellow throat and blue cap, it moves horizontally, takes hasty flight and disappears. But its passage, so furtive, summons me to recreate the ghost-like instant, to reinvent it, I don't know what I saw at first, was it really a tit? Was it really blue? Or was it faded grey like the feathers of a finch? I'll never truly know unless the scene repeats itself, and even if it does, even then... Maybe it's an hallucination? Or a vision problem? Do I walk better because I'm nearsighted? At forty, my eyes are bad. I don't calculate my movements, but make sweeping gestures with my arms, drawing what looks less like a specific plan than an ample dance move. I want to go forth with great strides, no matter the direction. With age, most people stop spinning in circles. I walk as fast as ever, see no better, bump into walls, bang into furniture, break glasses. This isn't the first time I think I've seen something several times, or once or twice, out the corner of my left eye. I should see an ophthalmologist or an optician once and for all. But is it worth it? I like the blur, as if realities were overlaid. The edges fade. Space is just countless shadows. Shadows of leaves, modulation of branches. Am I in the bush? Gone out the window frame? In the room I observe from? The design on the parquet shifts into a ripple of waves.

I haven't had it done, but I did have an optometrist recommend a cosmetic ophthalmologist rather than a dermatologist, so multiple opinions might be a good idea.

There's what Bertrand Russell might call a type difference here. An example:

"When to review a fact for best memorizing" and "what the fact means in context" are two vastly different levels, separated by more levels. Comparing them is not meaningful.
For exampole. FSRS can tell you exactly when to review the Japanese word HEfI5 (ophthalmologist), but it cannot tell you how that word functions differently in a medical report versus a casua conversation, how it relates to the broader semantic field of Japanese medical terminology, or how it interacts with the grammatical structures required to use it in a coherent sentence.

I have no clue how things work here nowadays, but way back then, we had to find the optician from whom to buy the glasses ourselves. Once I had the prescription from the pediatric ophthalmologist, my Dad found a reasonable place. He was a taxi driver, so he knew everyone. The glasses they had were

i get them back on wednesday, but my brain keeps thinking i forgot to wear them, so i’m constantly looking for them😵‍💫

I was able to get an emergency appointment with an ophthalmologist on Monday. Turns out that my eye and its retina is okay! This just happens as someone ages and the eye goes through changes. It will get better! In summary, the good news is....I'm just old.

Thanks for this. Super helpful! I had an ophthalmologist who wanted to make my right eye my dominant eye in cataract surgery. I canceled the surgery because I felt like she had the wrong eye. Turns out she did! Now I know which one is dominant.

Went to the ophthalmologist to look at a small hole in my eye. Didn’t really know what to expect.

They numbed & lasered it same day & I was not prepared. I must have looked terrified cause the doc kept reassuring me I was ok. But I literally watched my eyesight disappear as my eye got burned 😖
