I might've shared this snippet of Chapter 9 before, but it's the only use of "justice" in The Stardust of Failure. Which is not happenstance, as the workings of Fate are not necessarily just. Anyway, here's Nicky's experience of a total solar eclipse.

(lost in space) “It was fucking amazing, man. White fire coming off the edge of this black sun in big spikes. Pictures don’t do it justice.” Nicky watched the eclipse cold sober, but he felt a rush anyway from seeing the column of shadow come down on the earth, from feeling the air get cold on a blazing August day. Jeanette looked like she was tripping, the way she kept going under trees and catching little crescent-shaped suns in her hand during the lead-in to the big moment. And Dave kissed him, full on the mouth, when the eclipse was over. Right there in Nebraska in front of who-knew-how-many Nebraskans. Afterward, they went back to the hotel and did shots until Jeanette flushed pink and Dave was pawing at Nicky’s knee. Hell of a day.

“The things Var Dunnis said about vipers sneaking into his bed, that Elrik would get the Yoke over his dead body… and the strength of his rage. The duke wanted vengeance, not escape.” Spencer had been preoccupied with Wren’s safety last night, but now all the oddities tallied themselves in his mind until he reached an uncomfortable conclusion. “Duke Var Dunnis was murdered.” “By the Magnus?” Mother Borrallo leaned forward, whispering the words as if the duke’s lingering spirit could still hear them. “I doubt he did the deed himself, but yes.” “Bit convoluted, isn’t it?” The priestess took the refreshed tea Spencer offered, wrapping her hands around the cup as if grateful for its warmth. “Wouldn’t he have his assassin nab the necklace while they’re at it? Why bother hiring your thief at all?” Spencer frowned, considering Mother Borrallo’s question. He tried to think about it the way Wren would, squinting sideways at the situation to see all the extra angles. “To throw off suspicion?” He tested the words as he said them, gaining confidence in the theory as he went. “A murdered duke would cause an uproar among the nobility. There would be investigations and demands for justice. A suicide, on the other hand, is an embarrassment. People would want to sweep it under the rug and move on quickly.” “Bloody aristocracy. Why can’t they keep the scheming on their side of the goddess-forsaken ocean?” Mother Borrallo swore, throwing her napkin down over the remnants of her meal. Spencer didn’t have an answer for that, but fortunately, the Grim Mother didn’t seem to need one. She secured the hem of her veil beneath the high collar of her gown and stood, dusting nonexistent crumbs from her skirt.

“Ugh, good point,” Davik agreed, stepping closer to the box. “But what would we even do with so much?” “See the world!” Laylee burst out. “I mean, we could sell these, right? And just go wherever we wanted! Do whatever we wanted!” “All of us traveling the world together?” Davik grinned. “I’m in.” “I am, too,” Taraltos agreed. “Plus, moving around and only selling one or two gems in each place we visit would attract a lot less attention than if we sold them all at once.” Grinks’ grin took on a less frantic, but even more pleased, cast. “That would be fantastic! But what if we gave some of the money and gems away, too? I mean, you can all do what you want with your share, but even a tenth of mine will be more than I could ever need.” Davik nodded his head in near-bewilderment. “I’ve been living off the land half the year since I was a teenager. I think I’d go crazy if I tried to spend all this on myself.” “Seriously,” Laylee agreed, “some nice things now and then would be cool, but … I think I’ve already got what I really want.” “What if we donated it to Duke Vormil’s neighbors?” Taraltos mused. “Let them build up their defenses before he can attack, and maybe even drive him out of power?” Grinks’ eyes lit up as everyone grinned at each other. “I think we have our travel itinerary.”

Snippet from Sigils of Redemption (Book 3): Torsier finally spoke. “Phoenixes. Aralez.” Thalia didn’t know if he was still speaking Navikulan or not. “Huh?” “Torch bird. Flying dog,” Torsier translated. Thalia brightened, her eyes widening. “Flying dog?” “Has wings. Licks wounds and heals.” Thalia’s lantern unintentionally blinded her guests with her squealing joy. Aralez, a flying dog that heals with kisses? How could she not have heard of such a thing? Thalia begged, “May I have a book about the aralez, please?” Solanine spoke to Torsier in Navikulan. Torsier smiled and seemed to agree with what she said. Solanine calmly left the room.

White cyclones of snow dashed against the windowpane. The wind howled, and the pale blue light of the moon colored every surface of his bedroom the color of glacier ice. Tendrils of hoarfrost crept along the walls and floor and ceiling, closing in on his bed. On the other side of the glass, two eyes were gazing at him, empty and cold. They sparkled like the stars, but without a trace of rest or peace in their depths. A face seemed to take shape around those eyes, with a grim mouth and pale skin and cascades of long white hair. Come away, my darling. She placed her white hand upon his window, and it flew open. A gust of wind burst into the room, but she didn’t enter. She only stood there at the window, watching him. Kai saw himself sit up in the bed, rubbing his eyes confusedly. He could feel the sorrowful ache in his chest, and the icy needles that blazed in his hand. She reached out, beckoning for him. I can take your pain away. I can make it so you never feel pain again. Her mouth didn’t move as she spoke. Instead, the voice seemed to materialize from somewhere deep inside his own mind.   Kai watched himself, as if in a trance, climb out of bed and stumble toward her. Where are we going? he wondered. Somewhere far away, where we will be happy forever. Will you come, my dearest? Her words were tender, but the voice inside his head was dead and emotionless, as if she didn’t really understand the meaning of what she was saying. She was only reciting lines that she knew would persuade him to come.

I went with a different definition of bluster b/c I live 3° south of the arctic circle; it's cold & dark here for months, & I don't want to think about winter more than I already have to.

So instead, we can think about the holidays teachers signed up for.

The crowd’s raucous yells began to coagulate into a chant that made the earth shake: “Let her live! Let her fight! Let her live! Let her fight!” Utepec, seeing the people were against him, finally shouted back, “Fine! She may fight. But when she loses, I will punish her as I see fit!” “And when she wins,” Mireia countered, “you will set her free!” At those words, the arena erupted into cheers loud enough to be heard even by the gods far off in the Deep World.

A pitiful groan drew attention away from Gallara’s eloquence. Everyone turned as the only bandit who was still conscious - the one Prax had blinded - struggled to sit up, the remains of his eyes running down his face. Gallara noticed his sword lying next to him in the sand, bringing back vivid memories of a few moments ago; her fear, disgust, and embarrassment disappeared under the welcome surge of renewed anger. She stomped over and kicked sand into his sockets. “‘Take our pick of the women’?” she shouted at him. “Is that what you people always lead with, you figging turd golem?” “I’m sorry!” he cried, clutching his face instead of reaching for his sword. “I’m so sorry!” “If you’d won, would you be sorry then?” It was a rhetorical question, so Gallara just kicked him in the balls when he tried to answer. He collapsed, screaming again. Prax swooped over and bit off his ear. Off to the side, Kolent made a noise like an avalanche in his chest; Alakshi turned to him and said something completely unintelligible, and Kolent’s posture relaxed. Gallara realized she wasn’t really sure what to do now, other than feeling sick again as she looked at his messed-up face. She found that beating up a now-helpless murderer and rapist was well within her conscience, but she really didn’t feel like dragging it out. She sighed and turned, and Prax jumped onto her shoulder again. “What should we do with him?”

Book 1, from the middle of my favorite chapter (which is roughly the midpoint of the book). Loke's having a rough go for *reasons* and Magnar is trying to keep her awake because he's worried she'll die otherwise.

Loke’s fever was high but Magnar held her every time she had a shivering bout. He flipped through the book to see if there were any more notes, but he didn't find any. In desperation, he grabbed her massive missive and started to flip through it, seeing if there was anything he could do in this situation to help her along, but found many of the pages inside to be blank with occasional notes in the margins. He'd seen her study this book cover to cover and it always had something in it, yet everything was blank except for her notes and extra pages that were tucked in the back. She had detailed their journey in the back of the book and he probably shouldn't have read too much of it, but felt renewed when he saw a passage of how grateful she was towards him and how glad she had been to have selected him for the journey. He noticed her fading and leaned over and shook her to try and jostle her back to consciousness. Her hand fell onto one of the blank pages and it filled with words and diagrams. He carefully lifted her hand from it and everything had vanished. Was this book like this all along? She never allowed anyone else to look inside. Magnar wondered if she even knew it was full of blank pages and had this talent the whole time.
