i’m just so mad because if we absolutely had to elect an unqualified media personality to be president we should have gone with either of the guys from CAR TALK

Celia Imrie: Hecabe. Ok, ok, I mainly want to see her play the role of the enraged queen of Troy in the Euripides play (very happy to translate it when a theatre producer catches up to the brilliance of this idea). Regal, ruthless, would cheerfully murder a child to win.

Nick Mohammed: Helen of Sparta/Troy. Everyone expects him to be funny, like everyone expects Helen to be beautiful. But did they expect him to solve a puzzle faster than the speed of sound? When Euripides gives Helen her devastating speech in the Troades, she’s not just beauty, she’s massive brains.

Descendant of Helios the Sun god, heiress of powers of prophecy & magic, Medea the Sorceress uses her arts to poison the man who betrayed her. While she may be a #witch in Greek legend, she is also a wounded woman, asserting: "We women are the most beset by trials of any species" #LegendaryWednesday

"The word of truth is single in its nature; and a just cause needs no interpreting. It carries its own case. But the unjust argument, since it is sick, needs clever medicine."

Do you perhaps have the source for this quote? I cannot find it in Meditations, and trying to track down the origin via Google seems to both cite Aurelius and Euripides, but without text references or specifics.
It also doesn't really sound like Marcus Aurelius...

It is entirely plausible that the deceased really liked Euripides and that the choice is simply a kind of epitome alluding to the deceased's educated taste. It becomes a lot more overt in later centuries with Paedia-type imagery.

Maria Komninou giving an excellent intro to the short retrospective of #IrenePapas at the Greek Film Archives in Athens. Tonight we saw her star in #Cacoyannis’s #Electra (1962): a magnetic performance in a great film of #Euripides’ tragedy.

The greatest modern heir to the ancient poetic traditions of allusion, shared reference, and reimagining archetypal characters and situational stakes — what we see in Aeschylus, Euripides, Catullus, Ovid, etc. — is the collected literature on AO3.

Indeed. There’s lots of female power beneath that aggressively self-serving & masculine mythic surface, as, in an admittedly backhanded way, the Attic Greek dramatists, Euripides in particular, with Iphigenia, Medea, Electra - even his more sympathetic reading of Klytemnestra - start to suggest

Euripides today would be writing cynical dystopian 100k fics with Iron Man and Scarlet Witch, and Sappho would be putting Wonder Woman in a sexy flower shop AU.
