While the Volvo's lines always stood out from the crowd in Europe, they seemed much more mainstream in North America, where both GM and Chrysler were becoming enthusiastic proponents of the formal look. One example from 1982 is this similarly-sized new Chevrolet Celebrity.

I hated it when I had to rent one. Had to take it up to wine country in upstate NY. Brand new car, couldn't climb the hills on the fully paved normal state roads.
