Hello! I'm a legal historian specializing in immigration & First Amendment law/history. Unfortunately, my research & writing on ideological exclusion/deportation (1798 to Trump 1.0) continues to be relevant. I post on current events, immigration, free speech, & history. After President McKinley's assassination in 1901, anarchist Emma Goldman was arrested & then released because she had nothing to do with the assassination.

In its War on Anarchy, the US denaturalized Goldman in 1909.

And ... 10 years later, she was deported in 1919.

In 1952, British actor Charlie Chaplin left the US to promote his film "Limelight" in Europe.

Chaplin was barred from reentry unless he submitted to an interview to "prove his worth and right to enter" the US.

Chaplin refused.

He & his family moved to Switzerland.

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.
