The #C64 A-Z

My Fave A Games No.2

Armalyte

A blistering shoot-em-up that pushed the C64 to its limits, Armalyte's stunning backgrounds, detailed sprites, cool co-op gameplay & relentless alien waves make it feel like an arcade game on a humble C64. Tough, technical & gorgeous, it's a masterpiece.

Silkworm

2-Ply shoot 'em ups on the #C64 - Armalyte likely wins. For me Scorpius comes second. Then Silkworm. No frills. No fanfare. Just a bloody decent game. Play as Heli or Jeep (who chooses Jeep 1-Ply?!??) and off ye jolly well trot Mrs Mangle. Cracking game. Decent difficulty. Yes.

With "Platypus Reclayed" getting released I thought it'd be nice to have a list of Commodore 64 games that comprise its soundtrack. So here it is:

My 8-bit soundtrack vote for 1988 would have gone to Matt Gray for Last Ninja 2 on the C64. A host of other C64 contenders though:
Jeroen Tel - Cybernoid
Jonathan Dunn - Platoon
Fred Gray - Batman the Caped Crusader
Tim Follin - Bionic Commando
Martin Walker - Armalyte

In this episode of #Commodore64 games memories I take a technical deep dive into Power Drift, looking at its game graphics, sprite multiplexing, and disk loader which is really similar to the Armalyte level loader.

I totally can relate to that!

I very rapidly lost count of the time I was re-reading them...

Also, Cyberdyne Systems' Armalyte diary was really interesting to read. I learned about the existence of multiplexing on it...

Want to know some technical details about #Commodore64 Armalyte published by Thalamus? Then you're in luck, in this episode I look at the disk loader, level map and sprite multiplexing. I also find a couple of names hidden in the disk protection code.

Armalyte was originally marketed as a sequel to Delta but it turned out to be its own thing once it released. It's regarded today as one of the best computer shoot em ups ever made and it runs on the Commodore 64.

UK gamers know this; we North Americans missed out!

The European (and Australian) C64 scene is, and always was, head and shoulders above the American C64 scene. The PAL system gave programmers more raster time to play with, and we had Zzap! 64.

If that's not enough, remember that 8-bit Guy video where he said he'd never heard of Armalyte? 😀

Old blog post time!

Let's look back at Armalyte, a shoot 'em up that's considered a masterpiece on the Commodore 64. However, I played the Amiga version, so I got a very different experience, oops! Despite that, I came away thinking that it was a cool but brutally difficult game:
Armalyte
Armalyte isn’t insurmountable, but it does require patience, memorization, and preparation to complete it, let alone get past its first level. For that reason, this game is one that you really want to...

I have Armalyte on “The Hits” collection, as I was late to the Commodore 64…

Your reviews cost me a fortune back in the day.

I did really like the R-Type port back in the day. Catalypse was also pretty cool and I quite liked X-Out too. Didn’t play Armalyte until much later now. Was ok but I felt there was better on the platform.
