Take the World’s Hardest Quiz
Forty years ago, the Nintendo Entertainment System hit North American shores, singlehandedly resurrecting the video-game market after its infamous post-Atari crash in 1983. To do so, it needed a heavy hitter, a killer must-have title that could put butts in seats and lock audiences into the tube TV until their eyes bleed. That game was Super Mario Bros. — a product so potent, its exact alchemy has never been re-created.

Might be getting this slightly fuzzy, but an editor at DC told me that next to the Legion, the book that almost every creative seemed to ask about doing was Atari Force. This was after I asked if I could do an Atari Force book. Yeah, it was GOOD.

The difference in sheer playability over prior consoles was huge. NES games felt responsive and controllable in a way that Atari, Coleco and Intellivision didn't.
Honorable mention to Sega... the SG-1000/Master System is also a fine system, but it didn't penetrate much here in the US.

Today's random game Saturday is "Super Breakout" for the Atari 400/800 computer systems! If you're thinking "wow, what a simple game", you'd be wrong-- it calls itself 'sophisticated' on the back of the box, thank you very much!
