Elisabeth stands before her crying, looking as dishevelled as Helen had this morning, wearing greyish jeans that were perhaps once white, a sheer pale blue t-shirt with a coral-coloured bra beneath. Nothing looks clean, including her. The long blonde hair greasy and pulled into a ratty side ponytail and Helen notices as smudge on one of the lenses of her wire-rimmed glasses, right in front of the pupil. Helen imagines that must make it difficult to see but then realises that perhaps Elisabeth cannot tell the difference between the smudge and the blurriness of her teary eyes. Elisabeth, as if caught in the act of something unsavoury, quickly swipes at her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“Why do you dragons get so bent out of shape around other dragons?” Da’kota asked as, beyond the door, his crew hurried aboard the ship. A dragon swept over the courtyard, fires flickering along his wing as his foe breathed blazing heat at him. “We are creatures of wing and claw, of fire and flood!” she hissed – her voice high, squeaky, and relatively kitten-esque. “We are the bloody talons in the night, the beasts that you whisper about to bring fear to your little ones. We are mercurial, ever changing – every world, every creed, every religion, has a dragon in their myths and stories. We are the protean, shifting form of the wild. The untamed. You ask why we don’t get along? You may as well ask why the hurricane does not give way to the earthquake. Why the volcano does not ask the stars if it should blow. We are singular! We are everlasting! We! Are! Dragons!” Da’kota nodded. “I suppose that makes sense.” Then he crammed her into a large, mostly empty cauldron that had been used to hold the stew, slammed the lid onto it, and welded it shut with his back mounted extensible multitool. The shrieking, yowling sound of a cat in a tumble drier escaped from around the metal, mixed with words. “I am going to turn you into a girl and brain fuck you to death! I am going to eat your soul and shit it out of six anuses! I am going to take a gold piece from your horde, and lick it, and then put it back and not tell you which one I liiiiiiiiicked!” That last invective, which she clearly thought was the worst, was shrieked as Da’kota casually bowled the cauldron towards the kitchen.

Oh, how she would love to walk these streets, talk to these people and hear their stories. Perhaps her mother’s family would allow her to see the city. If you think the first word after a colon in a title should be capitalized, then by all means, use a .bst file that does that when it’s up to you. But don’t put braces in your .bib file to override OUR .bst file, because I’m just going to have to take them out.

Could anyone please recommend a comprehensive guide on grammar, speech, and tense in fiction? I'm usually ok with self-editing, but finding some issues that I never came across in academic writing. I'm happy to buy a book, but preferably not several books.
