“Frigidly shy at the commencement of a party, confusingly vigilant about the middle, and insultingly weary towards the end.” “Combine[s] stateliness with a desperate effort to be funny.” Pronouns: accustomed to he, also fine with they http://q.pheevr.ca

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for making this! I’ve downloaded the pdf and made a donation to the Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre.

I have no problem with ‘estrange’ as an active verb, but the direct object would be the one whose feelings are being changed. So ‘estrange (someone) from (someone/something)’ works for me, but ‘estrange (something) from (whatever)’ wouldn’t make much sense.

I guess the advantage of doing it that way is that it makes it easier to adjust the titles and responsibilities of cabinet ministers without having to amend a whole bunch of individual laws—you just need to update the table.

BC doesn’t seem to list it in the act itself, but there’s a separate table where you can look it up (either by act or by minister):

Do you have any particular favourite versions you could link to? Or is the sheer number and variety of them the point?

I thought it was Verlan for ‘haddock’.

Does that mean that if you have 20 Americans, at least one of them has to play naked?

A co-working session with twitter colleagues turned into a Community of Practice that turned into a whole-ass textbook:

(A side benefit of this would be eliminating the need to make an arbitrary choice about the orientation of “October” and “April”—each label would be either above or below the midline.)

This is a good way of presenting this! One tweak I’d want to make is aligning the month labels with the middle of the month rather the beginning, since months are sectors, not radii.

I’m glad people find this test useful, but its limitations have been pointed out …by @ivacheung.com (not a zombie).

I only wish we lived in a world where it would be reasonable for an alien to assume that publishing houses are the dominant species.

If I had a million stuivers (if I had a million stuivers),
I’d buy me a Knighthood of the Golden Carapace
(But not a real Knighthood of the Golden Carapace, that’s cruel)

Ah, thanks! I don’t really follow soccer, so I wasn’t thinking of any Abby in particular. (I did wonder whether Abby Wambaugh was the performer or the show, though, since I know Hannah Gadsby sometimes gives their shows people names.)

Which Abby am I thinking of?

Pro tip: If you are submitting a paper to a journal and the submission form asks you to list some keywords to encapsulate what your paper is about, the title of the journal is probably a little bit too general to be a useful keyword.

Did he go to university in Scotland? (Or, perhaps more relevantly, with Scots? My sister did a year at the University of Edinburgh, where she temporarily picked up a Cambridgeshire accent because that’s where her roommate was from.)

I guess they’re following the Seattle Kraken’s principle that if a creature is big enough, it doesn’t need to be plural.
