If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

Yes please
More than 200,000 Danish citizens have signed a petition to buy California as a response to Trump’s attempt to take Greenland.

They say they will provide Californians with “rule of law, universal health care, fact-based politics, and a lifetime supply of Danish pastries.”

By following best practices in safe streets -- daylighting, protected bike lanes, enforcing traffic laws -- San Francisco may have turned corner on pedestrian deaths.

Let's not let possibly false promise of autonomous cars distract us from things that save lives. www.sfchronicle.com/projects/202...
S.F. sees record drop in pedestrian fatalities, bucking statewide trends
San Francisco has seen the steepest year-over-year decline of pedestrian deaths on record, falling well below the city average of 30 deaths per year.

I don’t know how I missed this, but every tech person should get this instinctively.

What do we do when network traffic is overwhelming our systems? We block the source.

Shouldn’t cities do the same?
Car traffic is a DDoS attack on cities.

Amazing results in New York remind me how disappointing it is that congestion pricing efforts have stalled in San Francisco.

With congestion pricing, Muni service could be robustly funded, transit ridership would climb, and traffic through much of the Bay Area would significantly decrease.
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

Same goes as a pedestrian in SF.
We should tear down highways and congestion price all city centers. But even still, as a cyclist, the scaremongering over in SF after that cat was killed is real rich. I’ve ridden my bike a fair amount in SF. Waymos actually stop for cyclists, regular motorists don’t!

And if SFMTA is cutting budgets, they should start by selling off the Sutter Stockton parking garage for more useful real estate uses — it’s totally empty at 8 am on a Tuesday.

Starting next week, riding this bus and most other buses to BART will be FREE!

Clipper 2 rolls out on December 10, including free and low cost transfers between all transit agencies.

Riders will automatically receive discounts up to $2.85 when transferring within a two hour window.

This car was going 100 mph. That shouldn't be possible on a (sub)urban street. Every other commonly used consumer product has basic safeguards: you can't accidentally set your toaster to 2,000°F. Speed limiters in all cars now!

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.
