YIMBY 2026 trailer: Prop 13 repeal
Palo Alto just released a financial feasibility analysis of development in its downtown. Key takeaways:

-Nothing is feasible under current market conditions

-Removing impact fees—which are over $100/square foot and ~15% of TOTAL cost for midrise housing—would have a huge impact

It sucks how anti-housing construction LA can be because I think they have the highest concentration of creative architects in California.
I can't recall the last time I saw a project in LA that turned out so close to its renderings! la.urbanize.city/post/apartme...

In a recent OpEd, Mayor Bass says the City is making progress on homelessness. That’s not supported by the facts:

Heres how it will play out: Measure to reopen the highway gets put on the ballet. Then on Election Day it failed with 80+ in opposition to reopening it. Why? Because it’s a VERY popular park, and the road was gonna erode anyway. Anyone with half a brain wouldn’t want it to become a highway again.

Having a mayor who regularly bicycles for transportation could be transformative for New York City.
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will appeal a Queens judge’s order to rip out the 31st Street bike lane in Astoria, he told me at a presser in Greenpoint this morning.

He calls the decision “very disappointing,“ adding that he usually avoids riding on 31st because it’s unsafe.

If the worst single-family house in your n’hood costs over $1 million, then your n’hood should be zoned for apartment buildings.

(It’s pretty much that simple)

People who are fundamentally opposed to neighborhood change will employ any plausible-sounding and socially-acceptable argument against new housing.

If you attempt to address their stated concerns, they will immediately shift to a different argument because they are not operating in good faith.
A *huge* part of discourse is that there are certain objections to change that are coded as socially acceptable, even when they're the opposite of reality and standing in for the true agenda (plain old NIMBYism). School stuff is one of those items (others include affordability and trees).
These people are living in retirement communities and don’t even know it. It’s incredible. Student enrollment has fallen off a cliff all over coastal communities. Marin county’s median age is as old as Japan!

A million Muslims live in New York City. We belong here, as does every other New Yorker.

This is vile Islamophobia from the Councilwoman and it has no place in our city.

The presidency needs both an age limit & a narcissism limit. But no, American’s would rather complain about the flaws of a good candidate, than actually prevent the evil candidate (Trump) from winning! It’s like, DID YOU GUYS FORGET HOW AWFUL HIS FIRST TERM WAS???
we found the worst man on earth and made him the most powerful person in the world. twice.
this is one of the most psychotic things Trump has ever posted

Cars are so dangerous that parents who move their kids to the suburbs to avoid perceptions of urban crime increase their kid’s likelihood of dying a violent death by like 30 percent.
This happened in my city last week.

Since it seems like the entire world is obsessing over the potential dangers of teens riding ebikes lately, I feel like a reminder is in order: drivers are far and away the greatest threat to your kid and everyone else on the road, and always will be.

Joey… I don’t know how, but you found another way to make me even MORE jealous of Canada… AGAIN!!
Canadian housing permits jumped 14% in data released today, hitting the 4th-highest level in modern history as multifamily permits hit the 3rd-highest ever

Canada is now on track to allow roughly 300k housing units this year

Never forget, car dependency isn’t freedom.

Some might ask “what’s more free than cars?”

Choices.

Choices are more free than car dependency.

It’s not a hard concept.

I’m not pitting cars against any other single mode of transport.

I’m rejecting design that creates dependency on just one mode.

every time I think about the Trump administration, my only reaction is rage and desire for justice against the leaders of this despicable movement
a house held by the democratic party may not be able to legally order people to go to prison, but they can sure run wall to wall hearings every day of 2027 demonstrating why these people *should* go to prison

democratic leaders need to make a huge deal about the antivaxx insanity coming from RFK Jr.

like, in addition to being fucking insane, immoral, and dangerous, antivaxx is significantly less popular than even the most unpopular dem policies. we need to ceaselessly hammer them for it

When Gavin Newsom was elected in 2018, he said he would oversee construction of 3.5 million homes by now. Then he stuck his tail between his legs while segregationists and their left-NIMBY interns blocked major reforms until getting serious this year.

This dude has no stones to fight Republicans.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Bike-lanes don’t cause traffic congestion.

Car dependency, dumb land-use sprawl, too many (& bigger) cars being driven too much taking up too much space, highly subsidized driving costs, and not enough choices in how to get around, ALL cause traffic congestion.

Think about it. THAT’S common sense.

Republicans are not benevolent, they have always been about taking things away, whether it’s healthcare, transit, or education or even your right to be a citizen. Meanwhile, they give tax cuts to their billionaire friends… yay…
