it looks like the "mississippi" miracle in reading scores was due to be a pretty basic stats error in the design of the experimental study (selecting on the dependent variable)... a lotta people Got Got on this one! statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2025/12/01/h...

I don't know if the NCAA really has the authority to do it, but I think there needs to be recruiting rules for hiring coaches. There should at minimum be a deadline after the playoff has completed before which no new coaches can be hired.

It's been so long since the last season of Stranger Things that Joseph Quinn had time to ride his breakout into a role in Fantastic Four, film it, release it, and watch it on streaming all before the next season would be out.

Clean power growth is now covering all new global demand. Solar and wind generated 635 TWh in the first nine months of this year, exceeding the 603 TWh rise in global electricity demand, and holding fossil generation flat for the year. buff.ly/zRmwAmg

Q3 Global Power Report: No fossil fuel growth expected in 2025 | Ember
Solar and wind power grew fast enough to keep up with rising electricity demand in the first three quarters of 2025, as fossil fuel growth should be stagnated. Ember forecasts no growth for fossil…

people on the internet are way too willing to claim that books look "unread" from a photo. very rarely do any of my books look any worse for wear when I'm done with them

You could tell from Julio's body language after the Open Cup and Playoff losses that he knew his time here was done. Very sad to see him go—he had his issues, but he obviously loved this team and city and played his heart out for us. Wishing him the best with whatever's next.
Pura Vida since Day 1. 🇨🇷

Thank you, Julio, for helping Grow the Legend.

there are a lot of issues with this list but the most egregious to me is that Bogdanovich is mentioned zero (0) times
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

I just had to send an email to a colleague saying, essentially, "I think all the draft papers and emails you've sent me recently have been written by an LLM and I would like for that to stop, please"

this was a great reminder for us to schedule our boosters
In Texas' public health region 6/5S, which includes Houston, the number of emergency department visits for influenza is already almost on par with the *peak* of last year.

Why haven't any major social media platforms tried mixing the topic-based "subreddit" model with a simple reverse-chronological feed? You could still offer users an all-in feed with every sub the user subscribes to, but you'd get to tailor your audience and feed to the topic you want

When DALLE-2 came out, I remember having a conversation where I suggested that this would happen in ~five years. That prediction being about right doesn't make me feel great about my current predictions for what AI will do in the next five years.
This is one of the worst, most horrifying exposures we have ever seen. It is hard to overstate how bad the things that people are using tools like for are, and it's insane to pretend like these tools are anything other than nonconsensual porn machines

I've been banging this headlight drum for a while now, but I've also got a growing suspicion that unregulated LEDs retrofitted into stage lighting is also creating a small public health hazard that could be damaging people's vision for a while before it gets properly noticed.
I wish we, like, regulated shit nowadays. Between car bloat, blinding headlines, and neighbourhoods packed with rental suites but no on-property parking, driving is an absolute nightmare now.
Nearly all drivers say vehicles' lights are too bright in study

When I ate lunch outside near campus yesterday there was a guy listening to Rogan videos louder than I listen to movies inside my home. This is not a small change in civil society
Man you guys gotta be more normal about the one guy on your train not wearing headphones, it's annoying but it's not, like, a decay of society level issue.

This is only marginally less animated!! Who is this for!
Oh boy a live action remake of a Disney movie but instead of nice animation it’s people acting in front of digital backgrounds that look like dogshit!

Two things can both be true:

1) Listening to audiobooks is obviously still reading

2) Visual reading involves cultivating several habits that are independently healthy and useful in ways that have nothing to do with the actual text (singular focus, quiet reflection, reduced stimulus, even boredom)
