The point was never to save money. That was only ever a convenient justification for an effort to decimate the public sector and dismantle the US social safety net.
On DOGE’s watch, federal spending did not go down at all. It went up. But is still led to cuts that closed offices, canceled programs and deprived people of food, medicine and other aid.

it's just so emblematic of what passes for conservative thought, this belief that their children go to college not to leave ignorance behind by learning from experts, but rather to teach the experts from their locus of ignorance, and to have their nonsensical prior assumptions validated as true

This is critically important. Democrats need to pass it if they retake Congress. Trump will veto it. So pass it again. Campaign on it. Given current polling, corruption of the FBI, and the brutality of ICE and BP, there’s no better time to say, “Federal police are not above the law.”
Restoring Bivens rights: one bill "would allow citizens to sue for damages resulting from constitutional violations committed by federal officers," while the other "would create a cause of action against federal law enforcement agencies and police depts for constitutional violations."
These congressmen want to give you the right to sue federal law enforcement for violating your rights
The proposed bills aim to codify a 1971 Supreme Court ruling that allowed individuals to sue the feds for Fourth Amendment violations.

I remember when I saw the first season of Andor, it quietly blew my mind that there is never, in the entire Narkina 5 arc, a “so what’re you in for” scene. Even to be jokingly dismissed a la Shawshank Redemption

We never find out what anyone—except Cassian—is there for

Because *it doesn’t matter*

People have historically, and rightfully, seen the evil of Guantanamo, Abu Gharib, and now CECOT for what it is, but I wish more people would also see the evil in our domestic prisons too. How we treat our most vulnerable, including prisoners, really sets the tone for our whole society.
I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

Man, I bet they'd buried it on 60 Minutes now, where it would only have gotten a few million views.
The banned 60 Minutes episode about the CECOT torture prison used by the Trump admin is now exploding across the internet. Be sure to watch so you can see the excellent reporting done by Sharyn Alfonsi & her team at 60 Minutes:
And now someone has uploaded a version that wasn't filmed off a TV.

There's also the torrent link there, which is probably the fastest way to download the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT if you want to save the file locally to your computer.

I seem to remember a statement that they couldn't be returned to the US because there was no process for releasing prisoners from CECOT.
Yes, CECOT is a concentration camp in the guise of a prison. The Venezuelans were the first people to *ever* be released from CECOT since Bukele opened the prison in January 2023. Seriously. The first.
These are concentration camps. No other way to describe them. Truly horrific, and none of it surprising in the least.

I'm reading House Of Leaves, and the intro says that the book was originally circulated as a rough-bound partial manuscript, which, sure. That happens.

But then I get to the actual text, and that's such a direct parallel for the video being described that it has to be part of the bit, right?

Everyone who was so upset that trans women might use a women's bathroom will no doubt re registering their outrage at any moment.
ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.

Everyone sat around talking about how these people were incredibly stupid and then they managed to successfully implement large swathes of the plan that they all told us they were going to execute and you really have to wonder who is the stupid in this equation
