Gorgeous mosaic of a Little Owl (mochuelo común in Spanish) from the Roman city of Italica, just outside Seville. 2nd century CE. Part of a mosaic of 35 bird species. In Greek mythology, the species is the owl of Athena, representing the godess of wisdom, Minerva for the Romans.

Sabine is SO MAD. I picked up her front legs and held her hostage and KISSED HER LITTLE HEAD.

She's been angrily grooming herself for five minutes now.

(But she didn't hit me!)

Large Great Blue Heron at Crescent, San Francisco Bay, Emeryville, California. This heron was standing close to the shoreline last night. It was about an hour after sunset so the resolution is less than perfect.

Got this little buddy tonight after noticing someone else had shot it.
Cannot even imagine that a little 2 inch telescope can get these kind of obscure galaxies, probably a whole bunch of people living out there just in that fuzzy halo.
