Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

This Giving Tuesday, I want to give a plug to Urban Rivers. They're a local org that created Chicago's Wild Mile, and have helped improve river ecosystems in River Park and Bubbly Creek too!

Maybe with your support, we can get a van that isn't rusty with holes through it 💀

Chicago's budget season is still underway - and we're excited to see this op-ed in Crain's talking about the multi-million dollar opportunity of enforcing energy benchmarking!

Opinion: Chicago leaves millions on the table by ignoring its energy benchmarking law
For a city facing a budget deficit, it could at the very least capitalize on non-compliance and recommit to its climate goals.

This morning’s bike commute felt sketchier than yesterday’s. The bike lanes are a mess, very icy. Avoid. On a plus note, I saw many more people on bikes and e-scooters than I have on past similar days. People clearly rely on micro mobility now, even in the winter.

the thing is that many people do not want the PBLs to be plowed because they want the PBLs gone and this is their best example of why they suck. if we don't ask the city to plow the lanes then they don't know anyone wants it. 311 request takes <1 min, 2 min to email your alder with the request #

Treacherous biking out there this morning. Side streets in Logan are very icy. Main streets are clear. Protected bike lanes on Milwaukee are impassable. Careful out there. Ride with the cars and make sure you can been seen!

I already have seen multiple people not use turn signals even on icy side streets - they're counting on mind reading when they have that same traction as a sled 🤦🏻‍♂️
This is my third winter really sticking to cycling through it so I think I can decisively say that the most dangerous part about it is the same as any other season: drivers doing dumb impatient anti-social dangerous shit
dragged my feet leaving for work today but the bike ride wasn't all that bad. I rode Hoyne, Leavitt, and Webster for the majority of the trip and sticking to the tracked snow was just fine on my 2.2s.

My Gazelle after four hours in the snow: tell them how it really is 😠

Obligatory I biked in the snow photo - wouldn't recommend the side streets without studded tires

“The vacated homes were substantially cheaper than the new units and spanned diverse locations and housing types.”

When people move into new housing developments, they free up space in older housing. This is good for housing affordability and availability.
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

By any chance, are any of my mutuals interested in a gently used Nintendo Switch?

(I finally got the save data off of it, so it's time for him to find a new home)
