Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

I noticed @transit.app seems to have that figured out!

here’s more context to the videos DHS is putting out from Chicago.

“. . .Chicagoans are just trying to live their life. We’re not going to tolerate unconstitutional authoritarianism”

Really glad to see national coverage, including a great quote from @andrefor40th.bsky.social:

“Chicago’s been doing just fine, and then these guys showed up... there is big concern about what these unidentified, masked men are doing in this city without accountability. . .”

As the intensity of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has risen, residents of Chicago are increasingly pushing back. Federal agents repeatedly have been observed releasing smoke bombs, tear gas and pepper balls to disperse residents who gather or capture videos.
ICE Is Cracking Down on Chicago. Some Chicagoans Are Fighting Back.
Residents have begun forming volunteer groups to monitor their neighborhoods for federal immigration agents. Others honk their horns or blow whistles when they see agents nearby.

We keep working on new tools to understand Chicago's buildings, and this past week, a contributor added stats to our ward pages!

Have you wondered how many buildings are in your ward, and if their better than average? Find you ward at electrifychicago.net/wards
The Electrify Chicago page for Ward 42, showing that it has 370 tagged buildings, with 1.2 million in total emissions

Let's build more homes, to get more neighbors, and lower rents 💪🏻

NEW: A key Chicago City Council committee advanced a package of proposals on Tuesday designed to build more housing along Broadway in Edgewater and Uptown in an effort to make it more affordable to live along the CTA’s Red Line. @wttw.bsky.social
Key City Panel OKs Plan Designed to Build More Housing in Edgewater
Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th Ward) said the proposals will revitalize Broadway, which has not seen any new housing built on its west side for two decades, by making the commercial district more a...

New homes let the people who can afford it move out of older homes, that other folks can afford! You build nothing and richer people outcompete for the existing housing

Thanks @leniann.bsky.social for your leadership on this! Housing near transit is one of the best tools we have to fight climate change.

I think that's a very simplistic way of looking at it. A slow and small motorized vehicle is less of a threat to you than a fast non motorized one. A guy in Lycra going 25 mph scares me a lot more than an ebike going 15.

I think most folks don't mind speed limited electric micro mobility 🤷🏻‍♂️

Get a battery and an electric skillet, and just the classic eggs, pancakes and bacon!

Also doesn't an arrest alone go on your record? If I was arrested for, say, eating guacamole on the street, it would be disturbing and horrifying even if I was released, and the same absolutely applies here
viktorkoves.com
But people keep telling me that my ebike is expensive 🤔

Rogers Park and surrounding neighborhoods were hit hard by immigration enforcement activity over the weekend.

There's no competition here, but I want to name that the same heavy, violent, fast-moving abduction pattern has invaded the southwest side about three times a week for over a month now.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

Did we partner with @pintpeddler.bsky.social to support vendors for the Midnight Ride? Did the bike team buy out 5 vendors today? Did our Vendor Bike Tour next Saturday sell out so we had to add more tickets? ICE won’t stop, neither do we. ✊🏽 🫔 🔥 🧊

@chicagocta.bsky.social, folks don't know you can tap a credit card to get on the train or bus - copy New York and let's put some stickers on the card reader itself!

So an ebike with a throttle that goes, let's say 15 mph is a motorcycle??? I don't have a throttle, but I think speed is much more the concern.

I used to have a monthly pass pre COVID, it was a different time 😔
viktorkoves.com
I recommend it to coworkers who come visit, but I can't imagine locals who have lived with Ventra do it much, since you can't get a pass without a card
viktorkoves.com
No I mean I'm too paranoid even for that lol, I don't want someone taking my phone and then tapping into the train!
viktorkoves.com
I always unlock my phone anyway, so would Google Pay work that way? (I'm too paranoid to allow payments without unlock 😂)

This was something I noticed coming from New York, it's very obvious there that you don't need to get a card!
