I feel like I have to say this constantly, but Science is not Nature.

Nature is the world. Science is our half-assed, eternally flawed effort to understand that world through a glass darkly.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

You absolutely can lie via data & math & everything about how you present data is an argument for how to interpret/understand it

Everything we know is founded on best guesses & analogies

All technoscience is enmeshed with human values
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

In general, it takes about 1000 years to form 1cm of new soil.

i don’t think some americans understand the degree people outside their borders have to watch US domestic politics because of how US decisions can have significant consequences for us.

i hope we can reach a place where we don’t have to worry about that, in the way americans never do about us.
i wish we could be as ignorant of the united states as americans are about the rest of the world. hopefully one day 🙏

For decades the War Remains Museum in Ho Chi Minh City has shown only exhibits on US imperialism and atrocities. A new exhibit would have showcased the US-Vietnamese reconciliation process. But Trump shut down USAID and the US Institute of Peace, which created it. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/22/w...

I am an internationalist. I believe in creating a world where people across this planet can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity whoever they happen to be. I think this world will be substantially more difficult to bring about if the United States is controlled by capital and the right.

"Maybe thinking about what makes Xi and Putin happier is easier than considering what brings joy to American politicians that root for child labor and offshore opaque prison sentences."

it's darkly funny to even say the US has its own agency to run itself down to the ground.
