Like sorry, "if you build it they will come" is a fantasy if you build it in the middle of an inaccessible swamp, fail to tell anyone you've built it, the audience you have in mind doesn't have boats, and you punish your colleagues who row their own boats to offer the audience rides.

Conflating research with publishing in scholar-to-scholar journals comes at the expense of publishing research in other outlets that would *cough* service both the profession and the rest of the world by demonstrating how that research might be applicable.

My hottest academic take is that academics should write for the audiences they want to benefit from their work or they should shut it when those neglected audiences don't use their work.

Right, I know the reason, just not sure HOW legally codified it is. In the UK it's also fire code, but only if the capacity is more than like 60 people, so apparently practically everywhere just decided not to do it because they don't "have" to.

I’ve been in the ICU for most of the last week & I’m struggling so so so hard

the doctor has suggested I
get a dog to help me, but I cannot afford the cost of a hypoallergenic dog, let alone the cost of a service dog

do we think this is even worth the attempt to fundraise? y/n

Like in principle I don't much care about the privacy element so much as the fact that it's just really cheap, crap design. If I'm going to live somewhere the rest of my life, I would prefer if it weren't somewhere the developer clearly disdained my existence.

We're going into a tedious and unhelpful circle now and it's at least 5 hours later in the UK than the US, so I'm going to call it a night now.

In all seriousness, I hope you can get whatever healing you need; both for yourself, but also for the larger community you claim you want to help

I don't even care that much if we don't have super intellectual exchanges. I would settle for boringly practical where people just focus on grokking where a problem is and identifying sensible, realistic steps to implement a solution.

Like if the "shocking" thing and boundary expansion was done with a prosocial goal in mind, great! But 99% of the time it isn't, it's antisocial and comes at the expense of positive behaviour
