A no bullshit thing that I believe completely is that every single person should, during their adolescence, have to travel to a place where they are not the dominant ethnicity and they do not speak the dominant language and just have to feel what that's like at a formative age
I have (amongst others) two main reasons for supporting universal college tuition:
1. Literacy, as you mentioned
2. Taking young adults from around the country and forcing them to live with each other is another anti-reactionary experience that people should experience.

yesterday i was sobbing on the couch in a depressive episode letting the sounds of nfl redzone wash over me, and then aaron rodgers threw a pick-6 and i smiled for the first time all day. Powerful stuff
