There is a fantastic selection at my local branch!
“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”

Okay, I acknowledge that this is a picky language thing, but: almost every time you are tempted to write the word "praises" as a plural, the word you want is "praise." This is a slightly weird one because we do have the phrase "sang his/her praises," but we don't usually add an s to make it plural!

"Write! The written letter endures!" Scribal wit at the start of financial records for London bridge in 1424. Cleverly, the scribe created the letter 'S' by folding a speech scroll, so the form of the letter conveys the meaning of the conventional proverb, "speech is fleeting but writing endures."

An Astonishing Graph. For most of human history, around 50% of children used to die before they reached the end of puberty. In 2020, that number is 4.3%. (It’s 0.3% in countries like Japan & Norway.) [kottke.org]

Had a very fun evening at Say Hey House in the Junction, making felt ornaments. An unpolished, friendly sort of feel--facilitator was helpful with questions, but more a "craft with neighbours" vibe than a class. Inexpensive way to try something new, and an antidote to the winter blahs.

Every dollar JK Rowling makes from Harry Potter is going into bankrolling an extortion racket issuing legal threats to organizations across the UK to purge themselves of trans people or face ruinous lawfare.
i hope every single person who still buys harry potter merch or engages with that franchise is happy that they're literally making girl guides cry

girl guides uk have been forced very much against their will to exclude trans girls. full statement is here: www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-...

All 11 of The New Uni-Con panels are now £37.50, and the 6.5 hours of behind the scenes content from Behind Our Flag is only £25.

I'm going to see The Beths tomorrow and I am a little nervous because a) haven't been to a concert in ages and b) the door labelled "music" seems to open into a room filled with "sobbing" lately so I fear it will be embarrassing. Nevertheless: excited.
