Imagine, if you wish, the manager of a football club shouting at the fans that parking the bus and general hacking and shit-housery all over the pitch is, unfortunately, the only viable plan to win games. And then you look up the league table, and the club is 14pts off the first Europa League spots

The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Labour’s “we have to do it, or racism will get worse” argument is striking. Any other public policy failures British ethnic minorities should be on the hook for? Can we be blamed en bloc for Rachel Reeves’ budget next week too? www.ft.com/content/37b0...
Defence of Labour asylum policy reveals backsliding on racism
Home secretary’s framing of failures is partly low politics, but also a result of ministers’ poor approach to race relations

Have a modern gifts policy. Talk about never being out of your overdraft. Ironically this is one of the areas where they should sound more like the focus groups.

A thing I got completely wrong is I thought Tony Blair's "the reason for defeat is nearly always because progressives don't 'own the future" was just him going 'let's have a hopey-changey bit for the base', but this government has made me realise it is 100 per cent true.
I hate the ‘more money in your pocket’. It’s so outdated and sounds like we’re still in 1987 with pay packets from the factory!

People getting mad here about anyone saying it's good that MTG and Trump are fighting. I teach democratization every semester. The first slide says 'elite fracture.' That's always where it starts. It's good when people with bad politics are fighting one another.
I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win
BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

Dear Jim,
First of all, I *love* this idea! Unfortunately, I spoke with Legal and identified a few issues with this approach. For starters…
Well, it's a little clearer now why billionaires are so invested in technology that produces better written emails.

If one assumes Starmer will be gone after May, then the more they try to appeal to the right now, the more that leadership election is going to be about tacking back. (Especially if the Greens do well in London and other cities).

There's the constituency of 'I just don't like visible and audible difference' which Labour can't appeal to. And there's the 'I don't like that this has measurably made my area worse by introducing an insecure, economically detached class of people', which this policy makes worse.

Labour's fear of Reform, 'the election is tomorrow' attitude means that they are completely incapable of going 'okay, but what are *actually* the consequences of refugee and asylum policy that people don't like?'
This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

It's the language of opposition to justify a policy because it polls well (and frankly it's not the language of good opposition either!). Your policy proposals need to be justified in light of what they will actually *do*. See, for instance:

My more serious thoughts in Ricky's reply, but given the political situation, another reason this is a strange message to the PLP is that it really invites the joke 'why, who on earth is Shabana planning to appoint as Home Secretary when she becomes prime minister?'
What are your thoughts on their possible attempts at political blackmail? Will it work?
