I think I’m on year 3 of my Cambridge royalty check being too low to be worth actually sending to me. They just hold it for the following year.

Just a reminder that most academics are not making oodles of money from their university press books. For some reason, people think I am making bank with my Illinois book. I am not rich by any means.

Some make money with trade press books, but that isn't all of us. Thank you.
Adieu!

We NEVER get any door knocking or solicitation where we live (I’m 3 miles from a paved road and probably a 20 minute drive from a “sidewalk”) but during Covid they switched to mailing me and never stopped. Sometimes in Spanish just for good measure.

I had the same thought the other idea. I have no interest in becoming any type of Christian, but boy would I be more drawn to the JW with their pamphlets and the friendly LDS missionary kids than the guy who screams invective into a megaphone in the free speech zone.

They are going to disappear someone, and a mother or father or sister or brother is going to turn into a Liam Neeson movie and become a folk hero that makes Luigi look like a flash in the pan.

Bad News: Trump has a level of elite media capitulation it took Fidesz and PiS years to consolidate
Good news: his numbers still suck and nobody believes anything the government says
Long term bad news: the probably never will again.

I used to give the arts specific tour at Bucknell and I think we did a good job. I wonder if they still do that. (I was not an artist but I guess I was nominally in a humanities major)
cwolbrecht.bsky.social
The liberal arts college tour actually talking about the liberal arts and not just STEM challenge.

Taking a break from my normal “US press doesn’t understand Judaism” and “US press doesn’t understand Islam” to invoke another favorite “US press doesn’t understand Catholicism”

Not that those aren’t all still good ideas.

I love when they read @davidfaris.bsky.social book from like 5 crises ago.

Thune: "If the Democrats had won the majority, they probably would've tried to nuke the filibuster. And then you'd have four new senators from Puerto Rico and DC, you'd have a packed Supreme Court, you'd have abortion on demand ... "

Honestly if SB 79 works it should be good for a couple more congressional seats over the next decade.
mnolangray.bsky.social
Ladies and gentlemen, we did it. SB 79 has been signed.

My students asked me if Netanyahu killed him. It was all over social media apparently. I tried to respond as calmly as possible because I really want them to come ask me these questions and not shut down.

This is not terribly different from minority religion politics in the Mubarak era.
joelhs.bsky.social
This is how Trumpism squares the circle of using antisemitic tropes against bad rootless diaspora Jews while also claiming to be acting to protect Jews. They, the Christian nationalists, get to decide who is a Jew and who is therefore deserving of protection. Jews as symbols of Christian politics.

I’ve got a weird take on it. It’s gross of course to make games out of such serious issues BUT in years past, my whole life, it just NEVER would have been discussed. The fact that they feel like they have to talk about it is a credit to the protesters and advocates who have pressed for so long.

My affiliation to the Boy Scouts is far more embarrassing than my fraternity. One was a quasi fascist brotherhood that indoctrinated sexism and racism. The other mostly drank beer.

Folks are saying this is bad but you can’t fly if someone in an exit row is noncompliant. I saw and old woman who kinda babbled when they asked for the “verbal yes” and the removed her with the quickness.
kashhill.bsky.social
This is absolutely wild. I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.

This is actually a good flex and next time I buy my Alma mater about something I’m putting all my fraternity titles (I have several)

In Egypt they used an “anti-terrorism law” to repress a media report about the President’s health because a person said they were “terrified” to hear it. This is pretty much that.
tomscocca.bsky.social
It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all
tomscocca.bsky.social
One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...
ianmhartshorn.com
This is a good idea for all academics even if you, like me, find the idea of a podcast to be terrifying (I’ve done public radio twice and that was scary enough)

Historians who write books, please a) set up your own author website, independent of your university profile and b) get some professional headshots taken. Love, your friendly neighborhood podcaster.

(I like pop music and enjoyed Taylor Swift’s pandemic era albums. Some other albums not so much. And a lot just aren’t for me and that’s ok. But man people’s parasocials with her are unhinged.)
