KERNEN: Does the admin want to dismantle wind projects that are getting started?

WRIGHT: The track record is bad. We've spent hundreds of billions of subsidies for an energy source that's sometimes there. The main goal is to stop subsidizing. There are no meaningful subsidies for fossil fuels

This is a smart and useful analysis 🧵
Uhm...TM1 went offline because it wasn't profitable
"The owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear plant has been awarded a $1 billion federal loan guarantee that will enable it to shift onto taxpayers some of the risk of its plan to restart the Pennsylvania facility and sell the electricity to Microsoft for its data centers."

People forget this, perhaps because it happened so long ago, in a different world. But no question that it's the linchpin for everything that's happening now.
bush v gore is the hinge upon which basically everything awful from the last quarter century swings on
i don't think that bush v. gore is the *worst* ruling in the history of the supreme court, but i do think it is the most openly *corrupt* ruling in its history. a real disgrace.

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

That was a hell of speech—as local as it comes yet a national gauntlet from someone who can’t run for president. Mamdani is saying New York will show others the way.

U.S. as Mafia State. We used to refuse to do business with governments run by thugs. Now we are one. And with regard to everything climate, we have completely switched sides to join the worst of the worst - if not outdo them - in protecting fossil fuel interests around the world.
European negotiators were personally targeted by their American counterparts during a brutal negotiation over green shipping rules, European Commission officials told POLITICO.

This highly unusual gambit left diplomats shaken after the meeting.
US accused of threatening EU diplomats during bid to kill green shipping rules
Negotiators at shipping talks in London were told both they and their countries could be punished unless they voted with the U.S.

I would expect no less from Simon, and his refusal to even begin to entertain this sort of smart-ass, provocative bullshit is consistent not only with his own character as a writer, but also every character he ever wrote.

Replies to this post tell a very different story from the one the militarists are trying to sell
Actual resident of Washington, DC: the only time there’s been a serious crime near my current residence was DURING the occupation (an elderly lady was carjacked in the quiet and normally very safe alley behind my house). I am not happy with that outcome.
Rep. Riley Moore: "I think the actual residents of Washington DC are very happy with the outcome. And I think the actual residents of Chicago and our other great cities here in America would actually like to have safe streets and not people murdered every night."

If and when America finds a way out of authoritarianism, not only will ICE have to be abolished: All these people will need to be held accountable in a court of law for the monstrosities they are committing - those who are ordering them as well as those who are carrying them out.

Every single one.

We're going to have to invent new words to describe this kind of abject, nauseating corporate cowardice. Current vocabulary just isn't up to the task.
I’m old enough to remember when corporations fought tooth and nail all the way to the Supreme Court to make sure the government couldn’t take their money or control how they run their businesses.

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle the lawsuit brought by President Trump against the company for suspending his account.

Most of the funds will go towards the fund the president setup for the White House ballroom.

More of this, Democrats. More, more, more. All day, every day.
Let me just say a simple thing.

Democrats have no obligation to provide the votes to fund the destruction of our democracy.

If you want my vote for a bipartisan budget, there need to be protections to stop Trump's brazen lawlessness.

We all know ‘tragedy’ comes from Greek.

‘tragos’ = goat

‘aeidein’ = to sing

So ‘tragedy’ originally meant “goat song.”

Not to be confused with the GOAT song, which is probably “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman.

Excellent, if depressing, explainer about how we got here as a nation, and why so few of our fellow citizens who should share our outrage and alarm simply can't comprehend the horror of the moment, much less confront it.
I consume a good amount of normie, center-left political content (New Yorker, NYTimes, Atlantic, Bulwark, Hayes, Maddow, etc.) produced mostly by people who've been in the US politics biz for over 2 decades...and in the past month there's been a noticeable shift in tone and urgency.
How many more warning do American elites and masses need?

Essential thread for anyone looking for an effective way to fight back against this madness, along with refreshing proof that it can be decisively defeated through peaceful acts of moral courage.
Alright, so I've been afraid to say this out loud, but I think after today, I can say it: In the first Battle of Los Angeles, the good people of LA County have prevailed. We beat ICE back. 1/

Salute this man, along with the flag he had every right to use as a symbol in making his constitutionally protected point as a patriotic American.
A man, near the White House, who describes himself as a "retired disabled combat veteran," after burning an American flag tells bystanders "I am being detained because I expressed my First Amendment rights."
