By now my house is usually decorated for Christmas and I enjoy doing it. This year I can’t muster it. I just don’t feel like it matches reality. Today was nonstop jaw-dropping bad news. Except it’s also not surprising somehow. Which is why it feels so hopeless, I guess. Some things are too far gone.

One of my favorite things about the Minoans and Aztecs are that they had apartment buildings so swank that archaeologists confused them for palaces. They had luxury accommodations for many families close together making food prep and child care a communal commitment. And they had flush toilets!
