Fox guest on how to save money during the holidays:

"Remember, adults don't need gifts. Focus on the people in your life who are aged 3 to 18. Grandma doesn't need slippers. If they don't live by you, don't get them a gift."

The most serious threat vector for grad workers, and many faculty. Senior advisors who hold your visa and your future in their hand, who know you can't work off campus and are probably isolated from your networks. Sometimes bad men stumble into a broken system--but Summers clearly had a plan.
Summers conferred with Epstein frequently about how to extract sexual favors from a Harvard econ grad (AB '04, PhD '09)

The grad is from China

Epstein and Summers referred to her by the codename "Peril"

It's weird that right at the start of "Supersonic Rocket Ship," The Kinks' narrator says "we're going faster than light." I mean technically and practically that's a much more impressive result

The market for someone with a demographically marked identity who’s willing to say that identity (their own or anyone else’s) ultimately doesn’t matter is bottomless. This is true regardless of their position in society or the rest of their politics. Obama was a version of this, at least at times.

All of us from the post-2008 era (and before, no doubt) have traumatic memories of the academic job market, but I don't think the real problem was the hotel rooms (or the ballroom!), & I think it should be noticed that the real problem (no jobs, ridiculous power disparities) is now worse

Mine (MLA 2008, ended up doing a campus visit but didn't get it) was in a little suite that had a coffee table with armchairs around it. You could see the bed, but it wasn't AT the bed. Fancy
I thing I sometimes thing about is that university departments were still doing job interviews in hotel rooms in the mid aughts

Books like this will not get men reading literary fiction again. If these kinds of novels worked, Jonathan Franzen would have led to some kind of male readership renaissance. (And I am not a Franzen hater. The Corrections was brilliant.) Litfic wasn't scooped by women. It was scooped by video games.

It's decently well-written, but if it is the last word on masculinity (total lack of interiority, driven solely by sexual impulses that cannot be explained or controlled) then masculinity is in real trouble

It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"
Spike Lee just blessed Pope Leo with a custom Knicks jersey during his visit to the Vatican, just one week after the Pope was gifted a custom Chicago Bulls one.
