One time I was visiting Portland, Maine, I had a white guy yell "NI HAO" repeatedly at me from across the street. Luckily he only followed me for one block before giving up.
I think we need to be careful with conflating "leans Democratic" with "not racist" Maine has a long legacy of racism. So does Oregon which is a blue state. Oregon was literally conceived as a white supremacist fever dream. And the KKK ruled Indiana for a period.

Also as a climate/enviro reporter I have never forgotten about his "third world memo" arguing that it behooves us to dump toxic waste in low-income countries. He argued it was to "stimulate debate" but "devil's advocates are often devils"
