Players don't know what they want, are wrong about everything, and my main goal as a designer is to make them feel as bad as possible.

I swear, whenever I introduce a GMC who I note as secretly being some antagonistic power in disguise, my players always end up making them a friend, romantic interest, or apprentice, even when I'm not trying to have that happen.
